We live in the Murrells Inlet area and tried this restaurant for the first time. We sat at the bar at about 5 PM, and although the bar tender was rather busy, she cared for us very well. The restaurant is larger and has more room for seating than it appears from the outside. I had the haddock dinner, fried, with french fries and rice. My wife had the salad with blackened haddock. Both of our fish portions were quite large and obviously fresh fish, not something out of a box, and were perfectly prepared. The rice was brownish and had a very mild spice to it with flavoring I couldn't identify, but was very good and went well with the haddock. If the french fries had been fresh cut, the meal would have been even better. But we walked out knowing that there was absolutely nothing we could say that was bad about our experience there. We will absolutely return.

Loved the fried haddock and scallops. We live in New Hampshire and my parents live here in SC. Best haddock for this area, fresh and delicious. We will be sure to eat at Captain Johns again when we come back to SC for a visit. Seafood gumbo and Clam Chowder was excellent as well.

Had read other reviews and saw that the owner had a great lobster roll so we went to find out. The lobster roll was delicious as was the potato salad. My husband had the grilled seafood platter- fresh haddock, shrimp and scallops with french fries and coleslaw. He said it was the freshest fish he had had down here. All in all we liked the food.

Was very disappointed with the lobster roll. It is overpriced and lacked flavor. They claim the lobster is fresh and never frozen. Based on lack of flavor this is hard to believe. Fried Haddock sandwich was very good.

The BEST fish sandwich EVER!!!!!!!!!! Scallops, shrimp. Everything is fantastic !!!!!! Capt John has a picture of when he was a wee boy with a big fish on the menu and it is priceless. Wife Mary Lee is charming.

Went for dinner on a Saturday evening. The service was good, the quality of food was very good however, the amount of scallops on my plate was not satisfying, there were only six......deep disappointment! Being from the North where seafood is served plentiful and reasonable, I thought I paid enough for the plate and should have had more. They don't skimp on the fries and coleslaw but I'm paying top dollar for scallops. My spouse had the seafood plate which was satisfying. Other than that, I would return but order something else in combination where you get most for your money.

Tried the clam chowder, im from rhode island and use to chunks of clams, not put in a blender so they are hardly noticeable. Dont advertise as new england if you dont know how to make it. Guess they do things different in ny. Was tasty ....but..

My husband & I enjoy Captain John's for lunch-the haddock, fried or grilled is very good and the potato salad is the best. Quick, friendly service, reasonably priced for fresh seafood. My girlfriends and I also enjoy it for lunch. Women are picky, but we always find something delicious!

I think the amount of food for the money isn't great. I wish they would offer some LOCAL SPECIAL. The locals are what keep the business running in the winter! If they did that then they would have more business.

only disappointment I have had here are their clam days ... was hoping to get a big bowl of steamed clams, but they only serve fried ... no big deal because I just chose something else from their menu which is always top notch. Great selection of seafood or meats, service is friendly and just a great place!

We were going to try Capt. John's for their fried clams at lunch. After we sat down we were told that they get the fried clams on Thursday and they are gone by Friday. I feel they shouldn't advertise what they can't deliver.

This was our first visit to Capt. John's. The owner "John" answered the phone when I called for reservations, but was told they don't take them. He told me that all the seafood is made from fresh seafood, it would be a great dining experience. When we arrived at 5:50 on Sat. night there was plenty of room. We all odered the "special" which was a Crabcake platter for $20.00. The crabcake, scallops and shrimp were grilled perfectly. No filler in the crabcake, all meat. I definately will return and suggested this place to seafood loving family and friends. Great Place! 7/31/2010

My husband & I travel 40 mins for the freshest Super Salad on the Grand Strand. We have been going to Captain John's for over 2 years and we have never been disappointed. They are clean, courteous & consistant cooking. We have had other favorite restaurants but sometimes we are disappointed. We are never disappointed at Captiain Johns!!

The hostess seated us, waitress took our order and brought drinks and began appetizers, which were mixed up in the kitchen - we were then moved to another area because a preplanned wedding party had arrived. We were then told to "please dine quietly, we have a wedding party". As we were leaving, I told the owner. The hostess denied her remarks. I'll never go back. Too many GREAT restaurants in Pawleys Island to experience this.
