Captain Nance's is our families #1 seafood place in the area. Have been visiting this restaurant since 1989. The taste of the shrimp has not changed at all. Cole slaw is sweet (which we love} The waitress during the weekdays are the nicest folks. Different waitress on the weekends, they are younger and not so friendly. Value of the lunch special can't be beat. $7.25 for shrimp, fish, clams, or deviled crab includes slaw and baked potato or fries.

We ate here last Thursday night. It will be the last time, because our previous experience prior to this trip was as bad as this one. Knowing the kitchen can occasionally have an off night, we went back this time, hoping it was an aberration.... boy, were we wrong. As I said, we won't be going back, not ever. The atmosphere is loud, and diners are packed into the place like livestock being taken to slaughter. Admittedly, this is to be expected during vacation season so it was not a surprise. What is surprising is that many folks continually pouring in for bad food and complacent service. There were 8 of us dining (6 adults and 2 teenagers); everyone had seafood prepared in various ways. When the food finally arrived, some 40 - 45 minutes after ordering, what wasn't already stone cold was lukewarm. Practically everything - fried or broiled - was swimming in grease. Tea and water glasses went unfilled more than once. When we talked to the waitress about it, she said there was nothing that could be done about it, and to talk with the woman at the hostess desk on our way out. I did talk to the woman, and she seemed dismayed that anyone would complain about the food. Her attitude was quite arrogant and in no way customer service based at all. While I wasn't looking to get anything "comped" for an expensive and utterly disaster of our meal, it was never mentioned by her... as a matter of fact she never mentioned anything about making any of it right. I told her this was the second time in a row this had happened to us and she replied "then don't come back, you can find another place in the area to eat from now on." I told her not to worry, we would find other places, and I intended to let as many folks know about this as I could... While this post probably won't impact their business due to the sheer volume of unknowing tourists that go there, it will impact those within my circle of friends, and it will extend out to their friends as well as this gets passed along.

First time to eat here but won't be the last. Place was very clean and inviting. Seated right away beside a big picture window with a view. Service was great. I had shrimp, oysters and scallops. Outstanding. Very light breading so you could actually taste the seafood. Prices may be a little less than some places which is good also. We will be going back.

We arrived at Capt. Nance's at 11:15 on a Sunday. The restaurant was about half-filled. We were immediately taken to a table and our server arrived quickly to let us order our drinks. She returned with the drinks and hushpuppies quickly and took our order for food. The hushpuppies were a little on the sweet side and came with honey spread for dipping. It seemed like not even five minutes later, our food arrived. I ordered the shrimp lunch special, and my husband and son ordered the small flounder platter and the lunch special chicken fingers with a side of onion rings. The shrimp was fried perfectly. The batter was so thin, you could see the shrimp inside and you could actually taste shrimp and not just breading. My son enjoyed his flounder. My husband especially loved his onion rings. I tried one and they tasted hand-breaded. Crispy and not greasy. Delicious. The skin-on french fries tasted great and I can't pinpoint the actual spices they must have used, but suffice to say they are better than a fast-food place. Neither my son nor I enjoyed the cole slaw, but I'm a very picky eater. I was amazed how many shrimp were on my plate, and eating the shrimp and fries and a few hushpuppies left me full. My husband had to ask for a drink refill and we had to ask for the check. Considering how busy the restaurant had gotten, I can understand why. They were slammed with customers. It was hard to hear ourselves talk at the table, so I'd say the noise level was average or below. If we have time, we will visit Capt. Nance's again before going home.

The only good think about our waiter was that he was friendly; on the other hand, he stayed as far away from our table the entire evening and did as little as possible to meet our dining needs. The four in our party were exhausted because we did not know that the most difficult catch of the day would be our waiter Kress. As we left the restaurant that evening, I said to the hostess that the service was terrible. The young woman acted as if she had heard this comment multiple times an evening. With elbow on the back of her chair, and face firmly cemented to her hand, she glared at me, signed and turned away from me. Her insult only lacked the words, "Oh, whatever!" I walked back to her and asked the name of the owner and said I wanted to talk to him. "He never comes in," she said. Definitely, the owner would be well-advised to visit this eating establishment and retrain the salvageable help. This contact with the owner may be difficult to arrange since I wrote him two nights ago, and I still haven't heard a work from him. The four in our party decided we would spend our money at any other place than Nance's. If you go and get Kress as your waiter, take a long book, a sweater to knit or possibly a novel to write, because you will have plenty of time. And as you leave with your fellow diners, have a contest of getting the hostess to smile. It will be a challenging though not very productive activity since on Sunday night she gave service not with a smile but with a very surly attitude. Gone are the days of pride in one's job. My words to little surly hostess, "Find a job outside the service industry. You will never be happy there!"

My fish sandwich consisted of a dry hamburger bun and a cold piece of fried fish. My clam chowder seemed to be curdled. The waitress was harried and hurried and almost threw the food on the table. I have eaten at hundreds of Grand Strand restaurants over the past eight winters and this is the only one I recommend you miss.

In June, my husband and I just made it for the lunch prices while we were pricing fish on the docks. Even though the restuarant was not crowded and we were seated immediately, our server was slooow with everything except our drink order (not including refills) and our first basket of hushpuppies. The lunch prices and food were both great, although the food was on the greasy side, but still great. My family has been coming to Captain Nance's for 20 years...it is my Dad's favorite of them all. He eats there twice out of the 3-4 times they eat at Calabash/Little River area while vacationing. I took my husband there (who is an executive chef) to experience it for himself and he did enjoy it but had the same complaints as I. In July, during our vacation with my family, they ate at CN while my husband wanted to try Dockside (we all enjoyed Ella's 2 nights before). We had a 45 min wait while they had a 30 min wait. We were seated in 45 min with excellent timely service and delicious food. They were seated in 1.25 hours (hostess left their name off the wait list when they changed the full list) with horrible service (unfriendly and kept forgetting things...sounds like the one we had at lunch a month ago) and had greasy, overcooked food. Makes me glad my husband wanted to try a different restaurant, even if it did cost more...it was worth it. As much as we've always loved CN, if things do not improve, we will have to find another favorite.

Very Disappointed! Very over priced. Seating was promt. Our waitress (Donna) was great. For starters the hush puppies were the WORST we have ever had. The food was delivered very quick. The oysters and shrimp were delicious! How ever when starting to eat our filet of flounder disappointed they were full of bones and the deviled crap was over cooked. Bathrooms were nasty. When paying our bill the woman behind the counter did not ask how are meal was or ask us the please come back. We choice Captian Nance because it was on the waterway. We will not return.

Went 11/21/09 My wife and I both had the seafood platter. To say the food was poor would be giving it too much credit. The amount of food was fine but the food was fried in oil that was too old or had burnt. Kitchen staff needs to know when to change the oil at the proper time. No one hardly there but still took 10 min. to get the server to the table to take order. We will not go back.

Visited this restaurant twice during the week of 7/18/09 to 7/25/09. The lunch menu is limited: Fried Shrimp, Deviled Crab, Fish(Flounder), Clams (choice of one or two). Cost for the early-bird (<4:00) is only about $6. Our family loved it so much we went twice. Family atmosphere, good food, reasonably priced.

Our experience at Capt. Nance's was very disappointing. The waitress forgot our drinks and they brought out the wrong order after waiting 20 minutes for our food not just one person, but the entire party of five order was wrong. Once our food did arrive it was just ok. The breading was too heavy compared to other "Calabash" styled restaurants. After all of this the waitress forgot to bring us our bill and the hostess gave us a difficult time when we wanted to leave and requested our bill. I would skip this place if you had a choice.

We have dined at this restaurant for the past few years and have noticed a steady decline in both service and food quality. Today however really took the cake (or camera for that matter). We arrived at approximately noon and were seated immediately which was great for our party of 4 adults and 3 children. We then waited nearly 10 minutes for our waitress to deliver menus, silverware, etc. If the place had been packed I would have understood but this was not the case and our waitress appeared to have little interest in taking our orders. Once delivered, the food was adequate although the salads were full of rapidly browning lettuce. While the portions where large in size, the quality was lacking. The fried oysters were good but I think we could have done just as well and came out cheaper by going over to Captain D's or Long John Silvers. The service provided was at best minimum. Our waitress neglected our table and we were left without refills on our drinks. It took several tries to catch her attention to get our check and when it arrived it amounted to nearly $100 as we expected. Normally when traveling we tip very (VERY) well - usually 15% for adequate service and a full 25% for excellent service so we didnt feel at all bad for leaving less than 15% for our waitress. She certainly didnt earn a top tip and we werent just gonna throw one her way. We paid our bill at the register without so much as a "Thank you, please come again" from the woman behind the counter and left disappointed. We all agreed to try someplace new next time around. We traveled up the road to a shopping complex and this was where I discovered my camera (brand new, full of my son's awards day pics and worth well over $300) was missing. I had just taken seveal shots at the restaurant so we hopped back in the Explorer and made a quick trip back to pick up the camera. I walked in and asked if anyone had turn it in and was asked if we had eaten there. Hello?! We had just left! Our party of 7 wasnt THAT hard to miss!?? A waitress (not our original) made a half-hearted attempt at locating the camera and came up with nothing after making a quick trip over to the table and then into the back of the restaurant. She gave me a card for the establishment and told me to call back and check later. I left near tears. A short time later, my husband dropped me off at the shops and went back to the restaurant himself. After speaking with the manager and waitstaff and getting the same run around he threatened to call the police at which point the camera was promptly "found". Needless to say - we will NEVER visit this restaurant again and will warn others against it.

We have now eaten at three of the restaurants on the water at Calabash. This is by far the worst seafood restaurant in the entire area! We should have known, going on a Saturday evening, when the others were waiting out the door and we got into Capt Nance's in 10 minutes. I ordered the large scallops and flounder. The scallops were room temp, the flounder overcooked and had bones all in it. When I asked for a replacement, they brought me a half portion of hot scallops. The wife got the sauteed shrimp, which was popcorn size instead of medium, was extra salty, and rubbery like it was old. She could not eat it. The old thing good about this place was the hushpuppies. Finally the bill they presented was wrong (high) and I had to get the lady at the counter to fix it. She did not ask how our meal was, but I told her anyway, and she did not say anything (one would expect an "Im sorry" or such. She did not care, and appeared to be the owner. Captain Johns is a better option, but the best seafood around is next door at Dockside. Don't waste your time or money at Captain Nances!

THIS is the best value on the Strand for lunch. From 11 to 4 pm, $6.00 for the seafood lunch special. And, a good view of the inlet. Lots and lots of locals (check the plates in the parking lot), so don't go gripin' about the noise and the kids. You want to spend $30.00 a plate for lunch? Go to restaurant row. You want a good lunch, a nice little drive, nice scenery? This is the place...

When we questioned the size, they did replace our meal with the dinner size portion but were very rude about it. We had alrage group from 4 generations of my family. We were seated quickly, great service and awesome food. The beverages were served quick enough that the little ones didn't get bored. I'll return over and over. This was at the busiest season of the year at dinner time. The lunch menu is great and very reasonable.

This may have been the worst restaurant we've ever eaten in. The evening started with them telling us we would be seated within an hour. It actually took almost two to get our seats. The hush puppies were ok, but the waitress wouldn't refill our baskets at our request. The meals came out and most in our party ordered seafood, thinking that would be best at a seafood restaurant. The popcorn shrimp wasn't as good as long john silvers. The crabs were overcooked and you couldn't get them out. Water spewed from them each time you opened them. Two people who didn't want seafood ordered steaks. What a huge mistake! I would have to call it "mystery meat." it was the most awful meal we've had in myrtle. On the way out we saw cockroaches crawling around the place. I would stay far, far away from capt'n nances. Worst place ever!.

I have been eating at Calabash restaurants since before I can remember. For at least 15 years Capt. Nance's was the restaurant of choice. Not any more!

I was never really impressed with the atmosphere. Sure the view of the docks are great if you're lucky enough to get a window side table. Otherwise, you're stuck in the middle of loud strangers and screaming children.

Now about the food. The food is good and isn't overly priced, but sometimes it's served cold or "luke" warm, as kept under a heating lamp. There's a place 10 miles from my home that serves seafood that is priced the same and is just as fresh and better tasting, and I live 200 miles inland!

Finally the service. Last, but so important. As a party of two, we were seated near the kitchen in the back left of the restaurant. We waited several minutes before we caught a waitresses' attention and asked for service. No one came, even to ask for drink orders. We waited longer and nothing happened. After about ten minutes sitting there I started timing. After 20 minutes waiting, there was still no service. I was with my mother who is approching 80 years of age and she asked me not to get upset. I agreed with her but I said after 30 minutes of no service, we're leaving. Well, you guessed it. Thirty minutes went by without a drink, a menu or a "hey, how are you". There are too many other good restaurants in Calabash to have to settle for this one. I won't be back!

My family eats here about 10 times a year. The lunch platter is a great deal (I get shrimp, clam strips, hush puppies & baked potato) for about $6. The food is typical "Calabash style" which most everyone loves.

Was not bad for the money. Normal place was closed, decided to try this place out. Had the fried plater, around $14.00, fried shrimp were good, as well as the hush puppies. The only questionable item were the 'boiled shrimp,' they could have been better. over all though a nice place. Also try Billy Bass Seafood, they were good too.

Not the best seafood we've had, but for the price it was OK. First basket of hushpuppies they brought were cold. Fried clams and crab cakes were bad, really bad! Fries oysters were very good as were the fried shrimp. All in all for the price it was fair, but as they say "you get what you pay for". Not a true or fair example of Calabash cooking. We won't go back, but you should make your own judgement if you don't mind average seafood cooking.

We went to Capt. Nance's for lunch special on a Sat. during off tourist season (9/29/07)....Our Mistake! We aways oder take-out. We ordered the lunch special but evidently "Special" means "just give them the worst we've got to offer". We ordered shrimp, fish and baked potato. We had to ask for tarter and cocktail sauce or we wouldn't have gotten either one. Our waitress said she would take care of us and make sure we'd get as much as we wanted. When we got back to our condo there was no baked potato or french fries and 1 little measily tarter sauce apiece. We even gave a 5.00 tip to our hostess since she seemed to go out of her way to "take care of us". The line to this place was out the door but when we got in we saw several empty tables. Maybe if we had ordered the regular platters at the high prices we would have gotten better service and food but I think if they offer "specials" , it should be "special".

Bathrooms smelled like dead animals, and bathrooms are in the middle of the restaurant. The goofy looking cooks sitting in the dining area, very unprofessional.

When we had bones in the fish, the waitress said, "Some fish have bones ---some don't"

Total trash, bad experience....I can still smell the bathroom.

Visited Capt Nance's for lunch on our recent trip to Myrtle Beach. Husband and I both thought it was good. He had fried scallops and shrimp and I had broiled flounder and shrimp. Plenty of food for lunch, even had enough left to take out. Service was pretty good, food came quickly, but it was hard to get the waitress to return when we needed something else. Overall, we liked it and will return. Food was good and so's the view of the dock.

Our party of 8 enjoyed a wonderful fathers day meal at Capt. Nance. We were warmly greated and provided with timely and friendly service. The total amount of the bill did not leave a hole in my pocket, so that is always a nice thing. That was last year. This year my mom joined us at Capt Nance for dinner and we had a blast. It has become our tradition to bring each family member to Capt. Nance when they come to visit down south. Oh, we have had their, fish, shrimp(fried and grilled), fries, baked potatoe, salad, chopped steak, ice tea and hushpuppies. You won't leave hungry.

I have been going to captain nances, since 1981, the quality of the food is great, service can be on the low side sometimes, but thats when you don't leave a tip. The boiled shrimp, is just pure heaven, the deviled crab, is out of this world. People who don't like the seafood, in my way of thinking are just plan weird. I will continue to go there, and bring all my friends..

We enjoyed our food at Captain Nance's. The view was lovely and the prices were very reasonable. We went twice for lunch, which was $5.75 for our choice of two items, hushpuppies, and delicious coleslaw. The service was fast and adequate. (The waitresses had to ask who ordered what) Not much atmosphere other than the view. Everyone is seated in one big room.

If you want a quick, good lunch, this the place to go. I would leave dinner for a little more atmosphere. Kids would like it. I would recommend the shrimp - crunchy and fresh.

My husband and I drove up to Calabash from North Myrtle Beach to get a "really good" seafood lunch. We stopped at Capt Nance because there were more cars than at any other restaurant we had passed.

We had the lunch special with clam chowder. The chowder was very good. My husband had flounder and I had shrimp and flounder. The flounder was sooo over cooked that it was tough-could hardly cut into it. The shrimp was average. We were really disappointed and regretted that we didn't continue to ride and look for other restaurants.

My cousin had bulit Calabash up so much that I knew it probably didn't taste good. Was I ever wrong, The food was perfect, service even better. Plus it didn't bother me when my bill came and it was a little over fourteen dollars. Money well spent.the food was wonderful, the best shrimp I've ever ate. I plan on dining there again over thanksgiving break. where I am from West Virginia I only get to enjoy the wonderful Capt.Nance's twice a year. So those of you who get to enjoy yearly, you're lucky.

I was a little disappointed honestly after reading the reviews here in the quality of food. For a restaurant that is well known for fresh food, the only thing I really appreciated the taste of was the shrimp. It was done well in a light batter. The flounder was too dry and I only took one bite of the crab cake. I think the restaurant is nice and a good deal, but I can get this quality back at home.

This place has the best fried scallops and boiled shrimp I've ever tasted. When the shrimp came to the table with a combo platter, I thought they must be kidding, but once I tasted them, I passed some around to the family and everyone agreed they were the best. The atmosphere is so-so but most of the places on the water there aren't any different. Sort of noisy but the food makes up for it. We can't wait to go back.

I've always liked this place due to the seafood (it's ground zero for fried seafood), and visit frequently from Wilmington with my family. However, they recently took it up a couple of notches--they made the entire joint NON-SMOKING! How great is that? Especially in the middle of the smoking-belt of the south. It was a bold yet highly appreciated move. Other restaurants in the area lost our business because the ENTIRE joint was smoking. Cap'n Nance gets my business everytime. As well as the many friends and family I can drag through there. We all love it.

Ate there on 8-18-2005, nice menu I had crab cakes she had the salmon---all very fresh tasting--not to bad on the prices, Interesting we got there at 1;15 pm on a Thursday and they were still very busy an hour later when we left. What this means is that this place has good food. PS Buy some fresh shrimp from the boats close by that just came in. Yes Man.
