My wife and I had dinner there for our 41st wedding anniversary. Everything was wonderful. Could not have been any better. Great food and service. Portions were huge. We had two more meals from our left overs. We highly recommend you try it. Best place to eat at the beach!

For the past twelve years, my family ,along with my brothers family and my brothers friends families have been traveling to Cherry Grove 'Umberto's" is always a must! With a crowd like ours we always get a little taste of everything, and everything is exquisite:) Excellent service! One year we were there and the owners daughter told her dad "These people came in at 7:PM, and they're still here." He told her "They know how to eat." He came and sat with us for a good while, he's from Pittsburgh and we are from Philly. "All I want for Christmas is the recipe for their Pasta Fagioli! I made a large pot tonight, it was very good, but it wasn't UMBERTO'S:(

A trip to Myrtle Beach is never complete until we go to Umbertos. It is usually on our last nights stay that we go there and pack up the plentiful portions to bring home in our cooler. My husband and I are teary eyed as we share how the meals remind us of our Italian grandmothers cooking. The greens and beans are out of this world and Umbertos shares the recipe. I made them just this week and doubled the recipe because we love it so much. A gentleman from upstate New York recommended Umbertos to us. Mangia!!!!!!! It's our favorite family and romantic place for dinner in Myrtle Beach.

NOTE TO EVERYONE READING THIS SITE: There are TWO DIFFERENT restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area called "Umberto's". They are quite different. The two restaurants are less than 10 miles away from each other and are both on Hwy 17! Make sure that you are going to the right restaurant! One is Umberto's at Coquina Harbour, which is at 720 Highway 17, #A5, in Little River. The other is Umberto's At Barefoot Landing, which is at 4886 Highway 17 in North Myrtle Beach. I suspect many of the reviews on this site are for the wrong restaurant!

Almost didn't go to the restaurant based on the reviews I had read here. So glad we did not let the opinions of those posted deter us. I had the ribeye scampi special and my husband had the pork chops and they were both out of this world great! The pasta marinara that was served prior to our entrees is embedded in my memory. I could have licked the bowl clean! The atmosphere was great and everyone working there made us feel relaxed, attended to, and comfortable. My husband and I have dined all over town and out-of-town and will definitely put this restuarant on our list to return to. The restaurant was clean, table linens were clean and I have no idea what these other posts are referring to.

My husband and I arrived about 6pm on a weds, The bar was full (which you walk thru to get to host) and we were seated, The problem was, we were seated right next to a large group that had children, etc. There were only 3 other tables of diners. We soon decided that we would request a different table as soon as a server came. Problem is no one EVER came to wait on us. There were two servers working the other tables and even after one of the tables left, they cleaned that table and reset it...walking right by us several times! We sat for about 15 minutes without even being acknowledged then we left, Ironically, the "host" told us to have a nice day as we walked thru the bar on our way out! Whoa, this was a crappy experience....however, we did seek out a new Italian restaurant.....see review under Benny Rappas (yum!)

My husband and I live in Little River. We had heard about your restaurant, but had never been there. We came about a month ago, with a friend of ours. He had bragged so much about your restaurant, so we wanted to try it too. We ordered the pork chops and when they were served, they were almost black. They were very dry and just warm, nothing like we were told. Since our friend spoke so highly of you, we didn't say anything, but the more we thought about it, we felt impelled to tell you. There were very few people there, so there was no excuse. They looked like they had been warmed over and brought out. Please get back with me by e-mail. Barbie Harter - Little River Resident

I have heard so much about this restaurant that I could not wait to dine there. The waiter was pleasant , his service was good. The floor needed to be vacuumed badly, it was a dark colored carpet & everything from the dinners the previous day showed up on it. The napkins wer badly stained & table cloths wrinkled. I have been a server all my life so I was amazed by these things. The owner ( woman) came to our table wearing a shirt as strained as the napkins. The food was passable. I had the chicken marsala which was to sweet and not like any other marsala I have had before. The prices were reasonable but I think they should consider a new cook or differeft italian recipies & please new napkins..

I don't know how some reviews are so negative, I have gone here every year on a wed. night for the past 10 years and have never had a bad experience. I found the wait staff very pleasant and helpful and Liz the Piano Player remembers me as Mr. New York every time I visit, and I am looking forward to going again this year on May 12th.

My experience there was terrible. Other than nice atmosphere, someone playing piano, it was a big disappointment. The staff was very rude, no smiles. It has a 4 course dinner, they mentioned the soup course will have ham and when I told them we don't eat ham they didn't offer anything else instead. Told us the pasta course was with marinara sause, I asked if we can have alfredo instead of marinara, they said ok, then later found they charged us $$ extra for this when they never mentioned it will be extra.. The main course was good, but that hardly makes up for the staff rudeness. To add insult to injury, just checking my credit card charges, I found they overcharged me 30% over the bill amount i signed.. apparently retaliating for me leaving no tip, which I did for the reasons explained above.. Unlucky for them I check my credit charges and caught them and have reported to the credit card company.. I still can't believe people operate business this way and expect customers to come back!

This is the worst restaurant I've ever been to. The place is a dump: dead flies on the window sills, smells dirty and smoky, the furniture is shot, table linens weren't ironed and were fraying. Food was inedible. Frozen crab appetizer smothered in cocktail sauce on iceberg lettuce was $15. My shrimp was still frozen in the middle, and the fettucini alfredo was watery and piled with jarred garlic chunks all over the top. The bread wasn't even good. After my polite complaint about the meal, I received angel hair with spaghetti sauce that was worse than anything that I've had out of a jar. The manager didn't even take off the full meal (a whopping 24 dollars) off the check. Service was nice, but I would never ever go here. A huge waste of money. People who say this is good italian food have obviously not strayed far from South Carolina.

We were a party of 11 including two children. Great service, very nice waiter. Great bean salad and tomato salad. You can have as many refills on these as you can eat. Kitchen staff went out of their way to prepare gluten free food for our daughter who has celiac disease. My steak was great. We go to this restaurant every year when we visit Myrtle Beach.

I love it. I asked for a pork chop marsala, and the chef made it with no problem; even though it was not on the menu. The chop was cooked perfectly and the marsala had fresh mushrooms. The caesar salad was great, bread and oil with balsamic, who could ask for anything more. Oh yeah , I received soup and pasta as well. I was full when I left and happy. I think next time I'll skip the soup and pasta. WelI might have a few bites, but I will be holding back until the entree comes.

Thought we would try Umberto's on our latest trip to the Myrtle Beach area. My wife and I were very disappointed. Very limited winter menu. My wife's fettucini alfredo was very soupy with very little flavor. My chicken parmesan was alright but nothing special. The best thing about the meal was the bean soup. The waiter was a little overwhelming, even a little scary. First and last visit to this restaurant.

WOW! What a dump. Our friends from back home highly recommended this restaurant. Our first impression of this place was the swamp-like water in front we assumed was intended to be a fountain. we walked inside and noticed the fogged windows blocking what could be a great veiw. We sat down and order drinks (grey goose martinis) our server waited at the bar until the bartender put his video game down to make our drinks. there was also speculation our server was eligible for social security. then we noticed the entire staff was the living dead, just old and lifeless. The food wasn't bad if you could hold an appitite due to the surroundings. The bathrooms were filthy. The mens room ceiling was leaking. I'd hate to see the kitchen. We later found out we went to the wrong Umberto's. DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE.

What can I say? The front end staff blows away the back of the house. I have eaten here twice. Great service, nice tinkly piano, beautiful view of the marina. Lousy food. And by lousy, what I mean is, when I pay top buck for food, I really expect the food to be the deal maker. In this case, the wait staff saves the day for the place. The food? I don't know how to best describe it, hmmm... OK, say your high school grad goes to Pittsburgh culinary institute? And moves to Myrtle Beach? And you get a call saying he is the new chef at Umbertos? That is how to best describe the experience. Lots of salt, nothing that says "wow". More like "wow! All that salt is burning my mouth..." And, "Oh gosh, vodka sauce! How original!, is it 1990 yet?"

We had a party of 6 and I was the only 1 of the 6 that had an ok meal. The waiter sucked. He told us this wasn't his station, but he was doing it anyway to help out. Why bother if you arent going to provide good service? He brought the drinks and oil for the bread...but no bread. After about 15 minutes my friends daughter went to get the bread. The bean soup was good, but the waiter only bought 1 bowl for the 6 of us and it was the same size used for a party of 2 next to us. The meal I had was ok but not what I thought it would be. I was the only one in our party that was even somewhat happy with their meal like I said it was ok. The steaks my girlfriend and her daughter had weren't much they had no seasoning at all. Our checks came and the waiter wrote in his tips on all the checks like we were not smart enough to figure it out. I almost marked it out and wrote in what I thought he was worth but I didn't want to cause a scene, I just wanted to get out there, This was my first trip to the Myrtle Beach area and I thought if this any indication of the type of resturants in this area I will never come back here again. I will tell everyone I know not to eat there and will never go there again. Alan Thomas

My entire family and I were in Myrtle Beach 8-30-08 through 9-6-08. Our first night there we were looking for somewhere to eat and found Umberto's. This has got to be the worst experience of my entire vacation. We were tired and very hungry. The waiter acted like it was a burden to wait on us, the food was not good at all. From the New York Strip Steak dinners to the Pasta Dinners. There was no one at our table happy with the food nor the service. The prices would have been okay if the food and service were worth it. Very expensive and very much not worth it. I can say I will NEVER be back to their establishment again. I have been to Myrtle Beach numerous times and this really started my vacation off in the wrong mood. Would not feed the left overs to my dog.

We had a party of 6 and only 1 of the 6 was satisfied somewhat with the meal served. The food was very bland. Its a shame when you pay so much for a meal and you have to load it with salt and pepper. The waiter sucked. He even told us this wasnt his station, but he was doing it anyway. Why bother if you arent going to provide good service?? He brought the drinks and oil for the bread...but no bread. After 15 minutes my daughter went to get the bread. The bean soup was good, but the serving size bowl for the 6 of us was the same size used for a party of 2 next to us. The meals werent very tastey, but the prtion was large...who cares if it doesnt taste good? If you wanted to maybe share a meal with someone there was a $12 fee for the use of a plate. The steaks were over cooked and didnt have any seasoning on them. Then the checks came and the waiter wrote in his tips on all the checks and it was 21%!! Are you kidding me?!! We will never go to this restaurant again. It was poor quality of service AND food. 21% tip??? We felt like we were robbed. We had too much class to make a scene. But be forwarned!

We have eaten here 5 or 6 times. We have enjoyed each time, have been with a large group and the service was good until this last time when we took our daughter and son-in-law and told them how good a place this was to eat. We called for reservations at 6:30 pm. When we arrived nobody had put the reservations on the list. Fortunately, there were plenty of tables available. The entrees were fair, but not as good as what we had at other times. When we left, we walked to the marina to look at some of the boats and on our way back to the car, we were greeted by the waiter who called us over to the restaurant porch and asked what was wrong with our meal and why had we not left more tip. There were other people going into the restaurant who stopped to stare and it was very embarrassing. The next time we decide to go out to eat, it won't be this Umberto's.

I visit the Myrtle Beach area twice a year (once with the guys golfing the other with family). One of the guys suggested Umberto's during a golf trip. This is now a regular stop for me. The last visit was in December and we stopped around 3 o'clock before the restaurant was open. They let us in and the cook waited on us....the waitress came in and started early and the owner came in and was very nice. The service is always great. As usual the food was fantastic. Love the bean soup appetizer....large portions....not inexpensive.

My family and I dined at this restaurant with our two children ages 12 and 10. The atmosphere was stuffy at best and it was clear that parties of 4 were treated with less quality then parties of 10, especially if you have children with you. Although we were offered a childrens menu for our kids, when it came time to order we were told that our 12 year old could not order spaghetti and meatballs from the childrens menu because she had to be 10 or younger. Essentially they were forcing us to order an adult entree for our 12 year old. When we told our server that she could not eat that much and merely wanted a smaller meal of spaghetti and meatballs on the kids menu we were told she could not do that. She had to order from the adult menu, period. Needless to say, she couldn't not finish her meal and since we were staying at a nearby hotel that had no refridgeration, more than half of the dish went to waste. We had to throw it out. Our servers demeaner was cold and unfriendly towards us. When I asked if I could make a choice of pasta served with my meal I was flat out told "no" you only get what comes with it. Keep in mind that this is an Italian restaurant. It took forever for them to bring us our meal when the table behind us that came in after us was served quickly. It took over 10 minutes for him to bring me a glass of wine and when he asked if I cared for a second glass and I told him yes, he never brought it and I had to go find him to tell him forget it. I am a former chef and overall the food was very good however we will never eat here again because of the way they treated us and our kids. Being a chef I know that the customer always comes first and whatever they request within reason should be accommodated. There is no good reason that a 12 year old should be forced to choose off the adult menu. Since then, we have dined at numerous restaurants who told us they would be more then happy to let our 12 year old order from the kids menu and that we could do so as well if we choose. That's the way it should be. Bottomline is.....friendliness rules, stuffiness looses. You should eat here if you do not bring kids and you have a party of more than six.

My wife and I recently ate here. We always take our parents down with us, so this was our night away from the whole family, while the grandparents kept the kids. The view here is great, obviously, overlooking the marina. The restaurant is nice, clean, and there is attention to detail. The food is very good, wine is great, but the lone complaint we had is that despite sitting one table over from the window overlooking the marina, we could still hear the lady singing at the piano more than we wanted to. I don't mind some "low" light music while I dine, but she was too loud at times, and overbearing. There is something to be said for a quiet, romantic dinner, and you shouldn't have to talk over someone banging on a piano and singing. Would we go back again? Yes, but I would asked to be seated around a corner somewhere not in direct view of the piano.

We were encouraged to try this restaurant and after reading all of the already posted reviews, we gave it a try. What a disappointment! First of all, we were THE ONLY group in the restaurant during the 2+ hours we were there. Kind of felt like we were interrupting the staff members' free time. We had a 3 & a 5 year old in our group of 6 people. They were out of milk and the OJ and water we ordered for the kids came in adult sized large glasses (made of GLASS). Food was a bit pricey and the options were limited (one member HATES Caesar salad and that was the only option). View was amazing (looking out over the harbor). Waiter was great and very prompt and attentive. Kids spaghetti arrived in a SOUP of butter. Bean soup was EXCELLENT but came in a large bowl and we had to serve ourselves (same with the spaghetti that came as our side dish- strange). Wasn't a terrible experience, as we've had much, much worse but I would not spend the time or money to return here or recommend it to anyone, especially when the Villa Romana is only 1/2 hour away.

Concur with the review that said Tom the bartender made you feel like you've been a regular for a long time (by the end of our very first visit). The food was as extraordinary as the service. Just slightly pricey but worth every penny !!! I have been a long believer that Carrabbas had the best Veal Marsala in the world. I was wrong – it’s right here at Umberto’s !!!! The entire staff that we encountered (12 guys on a golf trip) could not possibly have been any more helpful. They were so kind they did not have a gal arrested who tried to steal a picture right off the wall and carried it outside (that is extreme kindness that none of us would not offered). I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.

I am a local and live on the marina. Having a place like Umberto's just a walk down the dock is a real benefit. Tom, the best bartender at the beach is there most nights save Tue and Thur and always treats customers like they have been locals forever. Jaquie, Jake and Lee, the owners, normally welcome you. The special pork chop dinner is not for the faint of heart. They are cut at the restaurant and are huge. The Osso Bucco is absolutely to die for. Crab Cakes are homeade and the soup is awesome. Highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

My love and I just had our second dinner at Umberto's. We absolutely LOVED it both times! The atmostphere is very romantic and classy. Yet, casual dress is totally acceptable. The staff is very attentive and polite. The food is INCREDIBLE and the portions are large. You can also share a meal and get charged $10.00 (which includes the delicious bean soup and phenomenal caeser salad, plus bread for BOTH) instead of paying for an additional entree. Entrees range from $13.00 to about $35.00. The outside of the restaurant can be deceiving however. Don't let that fool you! You will have a wonderful experience inside! There's a delightful view of the harbor as well!

This was a wonderful dining experience. Went there with a friend in October and the atmosphere had a great southern charm to it. Food was great and the lady on the piano had a wonderful voice. Very romantic setting and one I will never forget. My friend made a very nice choice for our dining pleasure. Pookie--Rocky Mount, NC

The entire meal wasvery average. I had veal cutlet parm. It was very bland and the breading was thick and not very good. The capalinni was a little overcooked and the marinara sauce was very fair. My wife had a veal dish with seafood and artichokes in a lemon sauce, which was too heavy. This rest. cannot compare to Luigie's N.Y. Italian Rest. in M.B. I won't be back.Singer was good ,however, I went for the food.

My husband and I were looking forward to our first visit to this supposedly upscale italian restaurant. It started out bad and got worse. Our waiter was almost toothless and the chairs at the table were worn out so that you sank in the middle. The waiter offered to switch them out but never did. The "beautiful view" of the marina was marred by the fogged windows. There was no choice of soup or salad. The bean soup was luke warm. My biggest complaint is that the sauce on the veal parmesan was thick and very, very heavy in spices and herbs. The veal was not pounded. It was thick and grainy. The marsala sauce was watery and tasteless. The bread was dry. We shared our disapointment and comments with the waiter. He smiled and handed my husband the bill. I have had a better food at frazolis..

Dear Ms. Isbill, We visited your resturant on Thursday, July 19 2007. We ordered Shrimp Scampi and Mussels Marinara, I ordered the mussels as my entre and a glass of Chanti Classico. The waiter who served us was Larry. The shrimp tasted fresh and well prepared, but the pasta was mushy. My mussels were cold, and the marinara was this thick glopp of over salted tasteless mess. I enjoy mussels and have eaten them all over the world, to include the original Umberto's in Little Italy in NY. I attempted to get our waiter's attention, but he never returned, I was able to get the attention of the cute blond waitress and asked her to alert our server. He never returned. The blond gal took the mussels back to the kitchen. I asked to substitute a shrimp cocktail in place of the mussels. I waited 10 minutes to get a shrimp coctail. when Larry finally brought it out to me, I asked for some additional horseradish. 5 min later he returned and told me that there was no more in the house. Also, the shrimp were still warm and not chilled, and the presentation was also lacking. I briefly discussed my displeasure with the manager, (gentleman with little gottee) he listened politely but never offered to make any compensation for our total dissafaction. Our waiter was there listening to our conversation and made the remark that we should never come back. I got the distinct impression that he was annoyed that I was taking up his table without ordering an entree. We will not return to your restaurant. I will follow up this email with a letter, just in case this does not get read. I pruposely did not leave him a tip because he was rude, surley and not attentive. I usually leave a tip if the food is bad but the service is good, as the food is not the waiter's fault. Too bad because we frequent the casino boat and like a good meal after. This restaurant is situated on the busy Hwy 17 which is a turn off in most cases due to traffic. However, this restaurant has a menu that is classy and different. I was not impressed with the level of expertise of the waitstaff, but they were friendly. The view out the big windows is great, and we definitely plan to eat there again.

If you like Italian food this place should be on the top of your list. Everything is wonderful and I think we have tried it all. Service is just fine and the view of the marina is a plus. We always enjoy the piano player. Sometimes it can be noisy, but that is to be expected in a resort area and does not take away from the experience.

We were here in Feb. '07. (the off season). Our meals at best were average to below average. (I'd hate to try this food when the place is packed!!). We had several chicken parmesan's, a steak, and a house specialty (an Umberto's platter, or something like that), pasta with vodka sauce and a shrimp parmesan. Only the vodka sauce was served hot. Every other dish was warm to luke warm. The salad was LOADED with garlic, so much so that even the waiter warned us that it had too much garlic!! The bean soup and bread & olive oil were the best part of the meal. On a positive note, the server was prompt, and tried his best to make our not so pleasant experience better. I would not recommend this place. 2 out of 6 meals were good, the rest were not.

We (group of 10-16 ages 1-61 three different families) have been dining at Umberto's while vacationing at Sunset Beach, NC for over 10 years.

Not only does our large diverse group feel they are worth the drive, but some have planned their length of stay according to which night we are going. We have always had great service, and the two times in over 10 years (that is well over 100 entree's) that an entree wasn't as expected it was taken care of right away. There is something for everyone to enjoy. I'm sure we have tried it all. We usually create a "sharing" plate where each person can taste what they might order next time.

My children who have for years refused to try the soup now love it as much as the rest of us. Someone always orders the Crab cakes and there is plenty of food so you can share or have some to take home to enjoy later. The wine list offers many wonderful choices also. We haven't had to wait with reservations. So visiting the water and boats come after our meal. The piano player helps to compensate/cover the sounds of other diners. She even played some Disney tunes for our smaller friends. We enjoy our dining experience and come back each year.

Heard alot about the food and atmosphere. Sorry it took us so long to experience what was being said. Was not disappointed at all !!!! Excellent food and great portions. The atmosphere was elegent yet relaxed. The view of the marina is beautiful and the service we received by our waiter, Chris, was wonderful! We go to Ocean Isle NC every year and this is our favorite place. We will definitely return year after year. There were 3 in our party and we all were very satisfied. A place worth checking out.

Outstanding food and service. The family style serving of the bread, salad, pasta, was great. Individual entrees were more than ample, especially after we had consumed the first portions. Were it not for the above average noise (conversation of patrons), five star quality. Good family restaurant, or for groups.

Good food with a nice view of the harbor. All but one of our group of four liked their entree, she felt there was not enough flavor in the butter garlic based sauce of the seafood pasta dish she had. The chicken parmesan and blackened chicken pasta were very good. All the meals we had came in very large portions.
