I've never been to Germany. But lived in RadclifF,KY {Fort Knox}. Several GI'S were married to German ladies. They would cook for charities and often have a food trailer on the Walmart parking lot. The food was always awesome. The food at this restaurant doesn't even taste German. The pork chops were tough. In fact I couldn't eat them! Also service is poor and over priced. Overall. Sucks

Decided to try this restaurant and that was a mistake. First off, waitress was very rude. Acted as if we were bothering her. When she had to repeat the sides to another person in our party, she actually made an extremely rude comment. Snatched the menus out of her hand. I asked if there was a problem and she said "no, why do you have one". Food came out literally floating in juice. No flavor to any dish. When we told waitress that we weren't pleased with our meals, her comment was what do you suppose I do about it? Manager didn't even come over to table after asking for them. Given check and we left. We have never been so disappointed in a restaurant as this one. The place is filthy. Silverware had left over chocolate on it at table..just overall gross.

We enjoyed the German food tremendously ... the only thing we would change is the horrible soft "American" rye bread. Why not buy some rye bread from Publix ... that would be more authentic ! In Charleston there are no German restaurants ! Have you ever considered moving further South ?? :) PS I love Prien :)

We had a wonderful dinner here -- my husband had one of the combo plates and I had pork jaeger schnitzel. The red cabbage was especially delicious. We both had a glass of the Oktoberfest beer -- great! Joe the accordion player was wonderful -- my dad always loved German music, and Joe's playing made me miss him a lot. Afterward, Joe came to our table and we had a lovely conversation, and he played Edelweiss for us. Overall, this was a great experience, and we wouldn't hesitate to come back (FYI we used a $25 restaurant.com certificate with no issue.)

We went to dinner on Friday evening. reservations were for 5:30pm. Seating and service were prompt. The food was flavorless. "Fried" potatoes (rather than artifical mashed potatoes) were chunks of boiled potatoes, no fried areas on the potatoes, floating in a greasy oil, no flavoring whatsoever from salt , pepper, or anything. Green beans were out of a can, absolutely no flavor. This was a very dissapointing experience. We'll never go back for the food! The atmosphere is quaint and the accordian player was entertaining. It's an ok place for a group that want good German beer, entertainment and don't care about the food. Good elsewhere for a descent meal.

Been here many times and this was the WORST service ever. Seems they prefer "larger" parties and there were only 2 of us. A party of 4 came in directly behind us and were served a good 10 minutes before the server even noticed were we there. After we finished our dinner (the food was much more greasy than we remembered), another party of 4 arrived and, AGAIN, they were catered to even before our plates were removed! We all had the same server and the restaurant was not busy. Lesson learned: don't go there if you have a party less than 4. Very disappointing.

Well where to start.. I should have followed my instinct when I opened the door and was hit with the smell of cigarette smoke from the bar which was right at the entrance. The decor was Germanesque. I asked the waitress if there veal was tender and she replied oh yes it is the best. Both my wife and I ordered the veal. I ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel and she ordered the veal with capers and anchovies. I asked if I could have a potato pancake instead of the mashed potatoes and she said it would be an additional charge (the same as if I ordered a side). I went with the mashed potatoes. When it was delivered to the table the powdered mashed potatoes and veal was smothered in French's brown gravy. My wife's veal was so shiny from the grease that it was inedible. The green beans were straight from the can. My wife could not eat hers and while they did offer to make her something else we knew it would be similar and just wanted out. You would think that they would make some amends on the price but hey what could you expect. Suffice it to say that they will never see us again.

I convinced my boyfriend to try this restaurant and he was hesitant but we both ended up enjoying it immensely. I got the german potato salad and cucumbers and smoked pork chop plate. It was very good and just enough food. My boyfriend got a combo plate with a ton of food. He was very pleased with what he got. We also ordered the apple streudel which was excellent. I've never had homemade streudel and it was wonderful! I would recommend trying the restaurant, it's a different experience.

My German aunt and mom were looking forward to having an authentic dinner at this restaurant. We were truly disappointed! The veal was tough, the beans were bland and the fried potatoes were greasy. We do not mind paying for a great dinner, but our bill was high and the food was not very good. The atmosphere and the waitress were pleasant and the accordian player did a nice job. We were very hopeful that this would be a great place to return to each year, but sadly we will not go again.

Every time we eat here we have a great time and the food is delicious. I am shocked to see some ratings so low, but there can be times when situations happen to prevent someone from having a good experience. I have had almost everything on the menu and never had an issue with any of it. It's not 100% perfect German food, but it's good quality. I have eaten in other German restaurants to be able to compare and find this place to be of good quality all around. The live oompa music is fun too.

We visited the restaurant as a "party" of 6 and were treated royally. The food was authentic and great, the service by our "fraulein" was excellent and having a table close to the entertainment was a definite bonus. The gentleman certainly kept everyone in high spirits with his accordion and his repertoire of music was second to none. He had us all in song. (At least those of us who knew the words !!) I would highly recommend a visit to this restaurant...

I live in the south end of the strand (Surfside Beach) and drive to North Myrtle Beach to dine here. The atmosphere is great along w/ the food. We take family and friends when they visit. The prices are good and just the same as any other restaurant. The restaurant.com coupon excludes bar items, so people should know that...as like previous post I am certian there two sides to the story--an owner is not going to refuse a program offering, especially when after that previous post we used one. I go also becuase I get points form priority and delta restaurant rewards program.

We have been to Germany several times and this restaurant really reminded us of many of the local restaurants in Bavaria -- great, authentic atmosphere. We thought the food was really good and moderately priced. They has some really good German beers on tap and the entertainment was good, although it made the noise level in the restaurant a little too loud for us. All and all, a really good experience. We will go back

I spent three and a half years in germany and have been back. I have been to this restaurant a number of times and if I can not go each time I am in mb I count the trip as less than perfect the food here is as authentic as you can get with the food we have in the us. The one man band is also authentic. I hate noisy eateries but here it fits. I will be back in a couple of weeks, god willing..

We had a coupon from Restaurant.com so we figured we'd try it. The place had tons of authentic atomosphere. Tall glasses of heffeweizen. The food was very good. I cannot say how authentic German it was, but a good meal for the price. My kids enjoyed the All You Can Eat pork chops. The sauerkraut was very good. All things considered not a bad place to eat. Our server was attentive and polite.

This is a resturant that i would call a "one timer" as in you go once and you will not go back. I couldnt wait to give this place a shot, now i know, i should have passed. The food is not up to snuff to german food. I would have to say that most of the food is out of the can. The red cabbage is not home made but stright out of the can, and the so called "seasonal" spetzle is a joke, its right from the box, and is not home made because is looked like pasta from the box, my wife makes spetzle and it doesnt look nothing like this. The snitzle was good but it wasnt thin as i had when traveling in germany. I would pass this joint by if you thinking of go here, it, not worth the price you are going to pay....

Horst Gasthaus was absolutely amazing!!! Three of my girlfriends and I are visiting Myrtle Beach for our spring break. We were searching for cool restaurants we could visit that we wouldn't be able to visit back home. Two of them have previously lived in Germany and were very, very excited for this restaurant, that was said to be so authentic by so many previous reviews. I thought the food was wonderful, as did everyone else. The pork schnitzel was my favorite, as well as the German Chocolate Cake! We all decided to get different entrees and desserts so we would have a variety of things to share with one another. On top of the food, they had a live accordion player, which was very entertaining. And the polka dancing that we joined in on was just an added plus. ;) Overall, it was a wonderful experience and I would very highly recommend it to anyone looking for some great authentic German food!!

AWESOME! There is no other word to describe this restaurant. Our family counts dinner at Horst Gasthaus as one of the top things in Myrtle. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The veal is incredible, shrimp is awesome, and the red cabbage is my favorite. I had my reservations the first time we planned on dining here and I was so wrong. It is incredible in every way. My sister and I found this restaurant abour 7 years ago on a "girls weekend" to the beach. We fell in love with the place. Since then we have been back every year (sometimes with 25 of our freinds and family). Whenever we go to HG we know that we will have great food and great entertainment. In fact, friends from Maryland are coming this weekend for an visit and the only thing they want to do is to go to HG for dinner. They said," It wouldn't be a visit to Myrtle Beach without going to HG" What a great restaurant. My husband adn I now live here and go several times a month . We all love the place.

Without a doubt one of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of dining in. The service is fantastic, the food is even better. The atmosphere is very authentic. I walked in one night on a whim and immediately felt right at home and have been going back ever since. My wife and I had a very good meal here. It may not be the best German food I ever had, but it was above average and very good. I would certainly go back. They had an accordian player who got the kids involved. Overall, it was a very nice experience and a great place for families.

We visited HG last week on our trip to Myrtle Beach. This was only the second German restaurant I have been to in my life, and I am a true novice at ordering German food. Our waitress went above and beyond to help me understand what things were and was great at engaging the kids and prodding them to eat, as they are very slow and picky eaters. The German Potato Salad was good, although I was surprised at it being cold. The first time I had it years ago, it was hot. I'm not sure which is authentic, if either. Sauerbraten and Schwineschnitzel were average, but the Bauernwurst (I think that was the name??) was very good. Home fries were like our fried potatoes. Kids were expecting wedge potatoes, but I should have warned them. Black Forest and German Chocolate cakes were not as good as our homemade. I would probably do the cheesecake (not German) next time. One of the best things, however, was having an accordian polka player who brought kids (including a college age kid!) up to help with one number. That may or may not appeal to everyone, but the music, decor and waitress outfits all made the somewhat average food a much more enjoyable experience. Prices are very reasonable for this area.

We had been to Horst Gasthaus several times and thought that it was pretty good. However, on the last trip there (over a year ago) we were very disappointed. It was our anniversary and wanted to go there and have a nice meal and good music. Instead, the musician was solely devoted to a large family with several unruly children, hopping around and making lots of noise. The music was all for the children, consisting of kiddie songs for the duration of our unromantic dinner. Never again!

I do not know where these other people have eaten German food but it was not in Germany. I spent almost five years in Germany and I was there four or five other times on the job. I am here to tell you that the food at this establishment is not even close to what real German food taste like or even looks like. The meat was tough (veal) and the potatoes where burnt. The best part of the whole $50.00 meal was the German beer, bread and the brown gravy. The rest was very poor. I will never return and would not advise anyone that likes real German food to even waste their time going to this place.

Delicious & yummy. I had the veal yaeger schnitzel (breaded veal cutlet with mushroom) with gravy and that is one of my favorites of german food. My guests ordered the pork chops and they enjoyed their dinner too. We would return to this establishment. Being a native of new york & new jersey,i had to try their food. This is a truly authentic german restaurant. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner/chef thomas that night and to tell him the food was very delicious. Our waitress krystal was very nice and polite.i cant wait to return for more german food..

We ate here Christmas day 2007 and had Christmas Goose for the first time. It was GREAT! My wife and I both loved it. The deserts were fair. The atmosphere was fun and noisy. The service was a little slow ... but so what ... it was worth the wait and while waiting we enjoyed the music. We were there again this year, except the week after Christmas and to our disappointment, no Christmas Goose .. only on Christmas Day. But we both enjoyed our meal once again and enjoyed the atmosphere of music and people having a good time!

Every year for that past 8 years our trip to Myrtle Beach must include a visit to Host Gasthaus. It wouldn't be a trip to the beach without going there. Two years ago, for my husbands 60th birthday there was 35 of us at the resaurant and they handled it wonderfully. From my 2 year old grandaughter dancing to the music to me and my 11 year old grandson dancing& singing along. Since then we have moved here and still enjoy our trips to this restaurant, and have introduced many of our friends to this wonderful restaurant. The food, atmosphere and service is outstanding.

I come to Myrtle Beach with a large group of people. For the past two years, we went to the Gast House. It was absolutely fabulous each time. Last year, we had a "theme" party and celebrated Oktoberfest there. We had hats, flowers, etc. The entertainment helped us along and we had a great time. We are visiting again next week, and will definitely go there for some great food and a great time. The funny thing about this is that my husband's name is Horst. That went over quite well at the restaurant.

This is one of my family's favorite places to eat at the Beach. My wife and I had a sausage sampler platter which was great! I especially like their German potato salad and their cucumber salad. Every meal I have had there has been wonderful. The atmosphere and the entertainment are great. Many of the same waitresses are still working that were working several years ago. I have found that restaurants with low employee turnover are usually concerned about quality issues. On a sad note, when we were there about a week ago, the gentleman who entertains advised the crowd that the lady who had performed with him had recently died. It was so sad because they performed so well together.

I have already confirmed our next meal there in June '08! Go check it out the all you can eat porkchops are the best I've eaten. I've eaten a LOT of different pork chops too...

Take the kids dancing. This place is super friendly and just about anything goes. Food is great if you like German stuff. I went for the atmosphere. My six yr. old boy got up and danced three songs. The five tables full of people clapped to the beat of the music while he danced. He made everyones night. Thanks to the live entertainment. A blast for all! He made tips that night from the patrons. Some people gave dollar bills to him. I hope he didn't take away from the waitresses....

What a disapointment and embarrassment this so-called "German" restaurant turned out to be. The food was terrible. Burned, greasy, breaded pork chops (tasted like it had been previously frozen, and freezer burned), served with red cabbage that made you gasp for breath, due to an overdose of cheap vinegar. The salad plate was a taste disaster. Again, way too much vinegar. Being German myself, I was so embarrassed to have brought a large party of guests to this restaurant. I wanted to introduce my guests to German cuisine, but am afraid that this "greasy spoon" dining fiasco may have left a bad taste in their mouths and they will not want to eat "German" food in the future. This is too bad, because they might never know how good German cuisine really is.

A great find, a fun place for the kids. The noise level is up there so don't plan on lots of conversation. You go to savor the German cuisine, knock down a few beers, and sing along with German John. You just can't resist singing along. It's cheesy entertainment but a great deal of sheer joy. You think you're a child again and somehow German John teases out from you those lyrics to songs (even from commercials and cartoons) you sang long ago. Lots of extended families attend. We make reservations to get a good table. There is a smoking section.

A "gemütlichkeit" atmoshere wherein great food and service was found. The live music was just bit too noisey for us, but it sure was great to hear the German Oldies played. We had the Bavarian Goulash. Glad we ordered the SR. portion. The meat was extremely tender and the noodles were tasty, as was the gravy. The red cabbage was flavorful. Naturally it went down well with a german beer. Great value!

The six of us, all adults, enjoyed sausage platters, beef rollups, and the Swiss chicken entrees. All were excellent. The musical entertainment added to the meal. The complimentary bread is very good. The beers were very good, as were the cucumbers and the German potato salad. The German chocolate cake was very good (but the Apple Strudel and the Black Forest cake that we had last year was not very enjoyable -- too dry). Good service. This was our second visit. We will be back.

I "treated" my family to a meal in this restaurant while on vacation. We lived in Germany for several years, and I wanted my now grown adopted German-born son to sample a good German meal. It was NOT German food. The southern fried potatoes were old and cold. It was The worst meal I've ever had at Myrtle Beach. Now, everytime we go to the beach, the family joke is, "Let's go to the Gasthaus and have some real German food."

The food is outstanding and the service is great. Everyone seemed to be having a great time. We have been there in the past and the entertainer was very loud. The music this time was authentic german and I was very pleased with the new entertainer. We will definately be back this winter.

I had talked my husband into trying the food here as i have been to Germany and always wanted to find some good weiner schnitel. I also wanted some real german cheesecake which they did not have. Well the food was terrible and my husband has never let me forget dragging him to this place!

I dont know why anyone would go here --we have tried it twice since we like German food and hoped it would get better. It didnt. There are far better places to get a meal.

The food is great...the entertainment is fun. If you are a fuddy duddy...then stay at home you probably wouldn't like it or anything else... I love this place! We eat there everytime we go to the beach. The service is great and the people are so friendly.

We saw this restaurant advertised last year after we had visited Germany the previous year and decided to give it a try. It is a very authentic German restaurant in every detail down to the marked beer glasses and German bier. We have now made it a regular stop on our visits to the beach, something that is rare for us to do with restaurants there.

This was our third trip to Myrtle Beach and our third trip to Horst Gasthaus. It will be a tradition from here out. The food is authentic and delicious. Our children love the atmosphere. Don't come expecting a quiet experience but expect to be entertained. German John rules the sqeeze box. The Black Forest cake is fabulous.

My golf group eats at Horst Gasthaus twice a year (our spring and fall trips). The food is always excellent and a great value. The sausage platters are excellent; we really like their red cabbage too. "German John" is a hoot- always lively and fun. If you want to go to a restaurant for quiet conversation this is not the place to go. The atmosphere is lively and can be noisy. But we always leave completely satisfied and have eaten there for 8 straight years. Many restaurants have come off our list over the years, but not Horst Gasthaus. Enjoy!

Awesome place if you know what an authentic German restaurant is like! Unlike the other people who thought they were going for a quiet boring dinner. They also have a great selection of German beers, I wish they had the liter mugs because there is nothing like a very big beer!!!
