Do not waste your money at any of the Calabash buffets. They are high priced and the food is nasty. We would never go back and would ni Ot recommend this restaurant to anyone and if I could have gotten my money back I would have. I was sick most of the night from the awful food.

After seeing the reviews of this restaurant, we decided to try them out. First off, we had gotten seated just fine. Then the worst service I had ever saw in my life! Lady with short grey hair who acted like the boss was cussing at the employee's. Well with us with two small children, this upset us greatly. Our food came out and was under cooked and tossed infront of us. Rushed us out the door and locked my child in the building while we were waiting on the outside porch area. We will NEVER eat here again..... it was a true horror to go to this place. Stay Away!

"Southern Style" cooking is one thing, but "Southern Style Seafood" can only be found in CALABASH, NC. You want a tea with a bite stop at "SEAFOOD HUT". If you want an awesome salad "ELLA's". If you want mouth watering chicken "DOCKSIDE". If you want a loud place "CAPT. NANCE's. If you want TRUE SOUTHERN STYLE SEAFOOD.....stop at Billy Bass. Yes, I said "BILLY BASS"...Why? Over the years seafood in Calabash, has become fast food for some restaurants......meaning speed cooking and grease filled food. Billy Bass, is not grease filled food like some places. You have a wait staff and owner who love what they do and this is there "LIFE". I think it's says alot when, the wait staff brings you out the last piece of chocolate layer cake - no charge! Slips your children something special. Nosie level - low because its a small restaurant. Quality of food excellent because it's cooked with CARE. Value of your meal...........PRICELESS

My wife and I ate here on nov. 7 and had a very enjoyable meal. The food was prepared just right and was fresh. The homemade hush puppies with cinnamon butter was a very good starter. The waitress was pleasant and friendly. Will eat here again on our next trip..

After reading the reviews, we decided to try it; we are from MD and are pretty picky about our seafood. While the fried flounder and shrimp were fine, the crab cake was terrible. The reviewer who said he's eaten crab cakes all over the east coast and these were the best, evidently has not been to St. Mary's or Calvert County MD. Our crabcakes are chock full of lump crabmeat, little filler (enough to hold it together), and either very lightly pan fried or broiled. We have been fooled before when we've tried crab dishes when we are down here, and swore never again. Billy Bass has confirmed my opinion. This area does not know how to fix any crab dish.

A little background. Have been eating in Calabash for almost 40 years and have tried them all. Also am an amatuer chef and know a little about frying seafood. Billy Bass does it right and so much better than some of the places you can see from their restaurant and are living on reputation alone, not the quality of their product and value. I first tried Billy Bass recently after reading the reviews here and will not venture to another restaurant in Calabash as long as the food and service remain as it was during my recent visits. Linda (the cook) does it just right---light breading, fried just right and not overcooked, and at the right temperature-another key so the seafood does not retain the cooking oil. If you like sub-par fried seafood, keep going to the other establishments. if you want it done right, try Billy Bass---you will not be disappointed.

Don't know who the ppl were that lived here for years, but the food here at this restaurant and the staff were wonderful. I ate in January at the Seafood Hut and anyone that stands in line has plenty of time to waste. The food here is excellent, fresh, lightly breaded and the staff is wonderful. The restaurant is the most clean and enjoyable in the area. Also, the interior is not tacky! Seafood Hut is horrible, drive past and go to Billy Bass for the best meal in the entire area. We ate here three times on the past trip, and we will return many times! Best coleslaw and flounder in the world

If you want FRESH seafood at a great price, don't pass this one by. It's a little small in size, but it is immaculate, up to date and wallet friendly!! I overheard some people in the grocery store talking about this place, and I had to see for myself if it was worth going to. I'm so glad I did. I got the lunch special for 5.95 - shrimp, stuffed crab, fried, coleslaw and some out of this world hushpuppies!! The amount was just right - not a bunch of cheap seafood loaded on a surfboard - it will stuff you and then some. None of this is frozen and those folks know how to prepare it. I will definitely take all my friends here and spread the word. Fresh, clean AND cheap! YUM!!! :)

Have lived in the area for 20 years an tried them all! Don't go to Billy Bass if you want good service or a polite waitstaff. The woman who runs the restaurant is tempermental at best and can be NASTY. The Cook is very nice, food adequate BUT the waitstaff are "hard of hearing" and the woman "manager" is anything BUT professional. Look out! There are plenty of other FINE places to eat. Try Ellas' or the Seafood Hut.

After reading the reviews on the internet about Billy Bass, I decided to check it out for myself. Sept.- 19- 2009 my wife and I had lunch there. Everything the reviews said was correct. The flounder, shrimp was lightly battered and delicious. The deviled crab, hushpuppies, slaw and tea was perfect. Staff and servers were polite quick no waiting. Restauraunt was clean. It was our anniversary and the waitress gave us a complimentary piece of cake. We will definately go back.

Calabash has been our choice for seafood every time we visit the beach, and Billy Bass Seafood is the best there! My husband and I agree that their light seafood breading, generous portions, affordable prices, homemade desserts, and friendly and attentive service is unmatched. This small family restaurant is probably the best kept secret at Calabash--but not for long!!!!

Calabash's BEST KEPT SECRET! amazing! I agree with previous comment about size, dont be put off. the ladies are WONDERFUL! the KEY LIME PIE IS TO DIE FOR!!! we chose this place because of the other AMAZING REVIEWS and we were NOT disappointed. My only suggestion is this: they bring you hush puppies, ASK FOR MORE BUTTER!! cinnamon butter was amazing! Secondly, the hushpuppies "Seem" to be on the house, but they really are from your dinner choice. I would have liked more hushpuppies or have known that this was not a part of our dinner selection. We could have asked for more, I am and SURE, these ladies would have given us more! Portions were great, the shrimp is bite size, or "Popcorn" and not deveined, but hey, this would take over a year to devein this little things! Atmosphere is great, small, quant little place, andy griffith like. I do not like Key Lime pie, what so ever, but BILLY BASS turned that around for me!!!! THIS IS A MUST! super light, KILLER FLAVOR and true perfection! We WILL ALWAYS make this a MUST STOP on our vacations each year. We have been to Ocean Isle Beach for over 30 years, and had never heard of this place, but NOW, we will MAKE SURE to return! We took photos of our dinners for others in our group while we "tested" this place out....... photos are available! P.S. TRY THE SAUTEED SHRIMP!!!! Sauteed in butter sauce, perfection! the fried shrimp is killer! Small menu, but has a bunch of different options. Note, there is no shrimp cocktail on the appetizer menu, just peel and eat. That is my only complaint. YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Don't be put off by the size of this small restaurant. WOW were we pleasantly surprised. The shrimp is so light and the hush puppies are MONEY!!!! So good they bring tears to your eyes thinking about the fish fries of the 50's. The slaw is fresh and somewhat different. The food is good to order and hot. Probably one of the best restaurants I have ever been to for Southern Style seafood. Try the fresh key lime pie for dessert if they are not sold out!

We had a party of 9 which included 3 children. When the waitress came to the table, it was very apparent that she was not happy. It seemed that she was not fond of waiting on children. Someone else brought out the hushpuppies as an appetizer, and my mom mentioned to her that she and my Dad ate there often. She said nothing in response. Since my parents live there, we eat there when we visit. However, that will be the last time we do. The service has been questionable before, but it was terrible that night. We were there on June 2, 2009.

We picked this restaraunt after looking at multiple reviews. The restaraunt has a home cooked atmosphere and is very cozy. The sweet bread hushpuppies were to die for. I could have been happy if that was all they brought me. However, the steamed crab legs were out of this world. We received a generous portion for a very reasonable (market) price. We loved our experience and will definately return for our next vacation!

Went first night at the beach for dinner and went back again for lunch following week. Dinner was the seafood platter for about $16. Absolutely perfectly done and so flavorful. Don't like oysters? They will gladly sub extra scallops. quiet when we went and we got to visit with all of the staff from time to time. Fantastic people, freindly, comical and just made the night so pleasant. I had never ventured to try flounder before and after having it here I found out what I was missing.Perfectly seasoned, flaky, moist and huge. We all took home plenty of extras and they were finished the following day at the condo. Lunch was equally good and for $5.95 it was a bargain. 15 trips to the beach and found this place as great as described on this site. Will be back.

Tea was sweetened correctly,no complaints at all.Restaurant was very clean, well lit and nicely appointed. We look forward to returning.

Well I have to say that I have eaten at a lot of seafood restaurants and Billy Bass seafood has to be one of the best. I went there during the off season for tourism and was waited on promptly when I walked in the door. By the time I had ordered there were fresh hush puppies on the table with the most amazing cinnamon butter to dip them in. I had a few more of those than I should have. My father and I both ordered the deluxe platter. Which came with flounder, shrimp, scallops, oysters, and a deviled crab. This deviled crab was the first one I had ever eaten that had chunks of crab meat in it, it was also the best one I had ever eaten as well. Everything was cooked perfectly. It is wonderful to have fresh seafood instead of the same old frozen stuff you get from inland seafood restaurants. The service was exceptional, I drink a lot of sweet tea and not even once did my glass get less than half full. All the servers that I came in contact with were very friendly and attentive. I inquired about buying a t shirt and they did not have my size, but they quickly offered to mail it to my home when it came in the following week. I just honestly have to say this was a most enjoyable visit, I was thoroughly pleased and would recommend Billy Bass Seafood to anyone. They way seafood is supposed to taste. :)

I read reviews on this restaurant prior to our trip to Myrtle Beach. I was a little skeptical but my husband and I decided to try it. The food was absolutely wonderful - fresh and hot. The service was excellent as well. We found out the cook there has been cooking seafood for 34 years and she knows what she is doing! The breading was light. Nothing was greasy. Seafood was fresh. The hushpuppies were wonderful! This should be a definite stop on your trip to the beach.

Billy Bass has the best seafood I have ever eaten. It is our favorite seafood restaurant. Every time we visit N. Myrtle Beach we make a trip to Calabash and eat at Billy Bass. On our last trip just a few weeks ago, we dined with them three different times. (That should tell you how wonderful the food and service is.) The flounder is so tender and flaky, the scallops melt in your mouth, and the deviled crab is seasoned perfectly. The hushpuppies are suberb and with the cinammon butter spread they taste like funnel cakes! All the food is delicious and not greasy. The staff are so friendly and make you feel right at home. Our eight old granddaughter fell in love with the staff and the food. She said it was the best in the whole world and she could eat it every day! If you want delicious food and friendly atmosphere then you must visit Billy Bass Seafood. It will continue to be the restaurant that we will support every time we are at the beach.

My family and I went to Billy Bass Seafood as the second restaurant we have tried in Calabash. We walked in and there was no wait and got a seat for 5 right away. We ordered their salmon which was very good and the crab cakes were very well too. The hushpuppies are excellent, and our waitress was very kind. We also got the shrimp sauteed which was very good as well. The clam chowder was very good as well. Overall, Billy Bass Seafood is a great place to eat and my family and I recommended everyone to eat there!

This place is really worth trying...we passed it for years before coming in. It will definitly be on our list from now on!

First off, I will have to disagree with the person who gave the only bad review on here. They have to have the wrong place, the crab legs (I've had a lot mind you.) were absolutely the largest and best I have had. I had 3 clusters, I ate all I could hold, then brought back 1/2 a pound of rendered meat. the cost was $19.99, and well worth it. I believe that this place is often overlooked for the more expensive places, but don't let the size and price fool you. BTW, they had local advertisement on the back of the menu, thusly, I think that is sign enough to prove that if the local crowd likes it, it must be good. We also went march 12th, were the first people in, and left happy.

Having read the reviews, we elected to try this restaurant and form our own opinion. First the atmosphere was great and the staff the friendliest we've seen anywhere. Second, this place was very clean which is not the case everywhere. Third, the food was superb!! The flounder and shrimp was prepared the way it should be; light in batter, moist, and great taste. The crab cake was the best we've ever eaten and that covers from coast to coast. The hushpuppies were outstanding!! And not that we needed it, but the 7-layer chocolate cake was oustanding so don't pass this up even if you have to take it home. We've tried seafood restaurants from Murrels Inlet to Calabash for 30 plus years, and this will become a regular for us. No local or visitor should pass this place up. It's worth the stop!!!

We went to Ocean Isle Beach for our vacation in June. My parents and brother left to go eat a little earlier than us and ended up eating at the other resturant right below Billy Bass. We decided to give Billys a try since the other place was packed. Boy am I glad we did. It was the best seafood I have ever eaten. The waitress was so nice and service was excellent. It is a small place, but good things come in small packages. Also the price is very cheap compared to other places. My parents had a bad experience and a long wait. Don't be fooled by fancy lights and big buildings.

There's Calabash seafood and then there is GOOD Calabash seafood like you'll find at Billy Bass Seafood! Your order is always freshly cooked after you order it - there aren't any heat lamps in this restaurant. The seafood is lightly battered, and cooked to your specifications. It's always moist on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. Their hushpuppies are the best in Calabash - served with cinnamon butter. Service is great, and you are treated like you are part of the family. Seniors get 10% discount on total bill. The Key Lime pie is homemade, with crushed pecans in the crust and meringue on top. Strawberry crepes are freshly prepared and wonderful! Small size of the restaurant gives you the feeling of eating in someone's home - a personal touch. Don't miss this restaurant if you want really good Calabash-style food!

My wife and I had a meal here one evening on the way to Myrtle Beach. Overall everything was good. The dining area is a little small with only approx. 14 tables. We were seated within two minutes. The noise level was not bad compared to other restaurants in the area. The staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. I would reccomend this restaurant to my friends. It was a positive experience and a great start to our vacation.

Visiting from Durham, NC we were in search of some good, fulfilling food. Billy Bass was recommended and was so good, we went back twice the same day. The hushpuppies with honey-cinnamon butter was delicious. The rest of our meals were fresh and seasoned to perfection. We ate shrimp salad, steak, sauteed shrimp, flounder, deviled crab and was not disappointed at all. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner. Excellent homemade dessert as well.

My wife and I usually drive down to Calabash at least once every two months for seafood. I love good thick fried flounder with lots of white meat. My wife and I both love fried shrimp We used to go to Beck's at the corner in Calabash because of the good food and hush puppies. They changed management a few years ago, and it seemed the recipe on the hush puppies and slaw were changed. I went down with a golfing buddy a couple of years ago, and we decided to try Billy Bass Seafood. It was all I could ask for. Good Flounder, Shrimp, and Hush Puppies. I carried my wife back a few weeks later, and we are both totally satisified. Good fish, shrimp, french fries, baked potatos, hush puppies, slaw . You cannot ask for better food. This is now our regular stop when we are in the beach area. I recommend Billy Bass Seafood to all my friends, and anyone else that loves good fried flounder and shrimp.

We were staying at a friend's house in Sunset Beach and they had recommended Billy Bass before we came down. We went for the lunch special and glad we did. The hushpuppies and honey butter are excellent. So were the flounder, shrimp, and clam strips. We enjoyed it so much that we went back to Billy Bass a second time. The staff is friendly and welcoming. Don't miss the hidden gem on River Rd. If you drive by and hit the dock, turn around pop into Billy Bass instead.

The food is excellent! Hushpuppies with cinnamon butter that you can't get enough of, Calabash-style seafood (perfectly prepared - just enough breading to crisp it - we always have their shrimp and their flounder), and coleslaw made from their own recipe - yum! Linda, the EXCELLENT cook, and Pat, who meets the customers with a cheery smile and a down-home welcome are jewels! Lee and the rest of the staff is always friendly, as well. Your food is prepared for you after you place your order, and is on your table in minutes. Prices are excellent for this quality of food! The atmosphere is far superior to what it was under earlier management - when there was a gruffness about the manager that "put off" a lot of customers. You have to really be looking to find this little jewel on the River Road in Calabash. If you're not careful, you'll drive right by - and miss some of the best seafood you ever had!

We went to Billy Bass because the line at our favorite Calabash seafood restaurant (Ella's) was too long for our party of 6. We had family down from VA and they had a taste for crab. The meal started wonderfully with really good hushpuppies and cinnamon butter. But that turned out to be the highlight. Several of us purchased the 'all you can eat crab legs' and were very disappointed. The legs were very 'soggy' and had obviously been cooked earlier and then just left to soak until they were warmed up for an order. If you go - don't go for the crabs.

We've been to a few resturants in Calabash and the Myrtle Beach area over the past 6 or so years and have driven past Billy Bass's many times .. won't do that anymore ! The staff is so friendly, the food good, the place is very clean and it's not crowded. It a non-smoking resturant too !!

They have Michelobe too.

We ate there about 4 or 5 times in March 2006, had our food broiled and really enjoyed it. We'll be back again...can hardly wait.

We have a rental home on Sunset Beach and have been eating in Calabash for many years. Out favorite restaurant is Billy Bass, and we have tried them all. There is no wait, the food is always hot, and good and the service great. It is a smaller restaurant but the food is the best in our humble opinion. Give it a try at least. Hickory, NC

One day I decided that i would go out to Calabash to have some of that world famous seafood. So there I was waiting in line at one of the waterfront resturants. The only problem about that is the fact that the wait was going to be at the least one hour. Everywhere I went there were extremely long waits, and I was starving. Then I saw Billy Bass Seafood, and I had never been there before so I thought I would give it a try. When I walked in this place became entirely appealing due to the fact that there was no wait. I was greeted with a big smile that made me feel welcome. But the best part was the food, it was amazing, and I give it an A+. There is no doubt that will be back to eat at this lovely resturant. I advise everyone that want's to fine dine to eat here.

I must tell you that I have been going to Calabash for seafood since I was a little girl. For some reason, I have never been to Billy Bass' until this past summer. This is a wonderful place. The food was wonderful, everyone was so friendly, made you feel like you were part of the family. I highly recommend this place !! I can't wait to go back !
