Since the military moved us from Maryland to Charleston I've been looking for a good place to have Maryland Blue Crabs, finally found Backfinz, the crabs are the best just as if I was in Maryland and the service is always great as well. So glad I found Backfinz. I make trips from Charleston just to eat there.

We're here now and this place is horrible. The owner's daughter is horrible and the owner doesn't care. They are out of some of the choices on the menu and out of all drought beer. We are from Virginia and Maryland and live in Texas so we came along way for blue crabs. They better be good. Terrible service. If this were a Redskin's restaurant, I guarantee the service would be impeccable. GO SKINS. Houston Texas

We moved from MD several years ago. I have NEVER seen a crab house that had no crabs at 4:00 PM on a Saturday evening and stayed in business. Walk in the front door of Dominoes; they have no dough... do you ever go back?

I would like to comment on the post dated 10-21-2012. My wife and I ate there and enjoyed the crabs very much. Since we got there very early we were some of the only ones there and didn't see anyone smoking and did not smell any smoke. HOWEVER! your comment about smoking and people being from up NORTH . Which I moved from Maryland 45 years ago. Some of us have lung problems (COPD) and smoke causes us to have exacerbations( Look it up) and we can't be around cigaret smoke or anyother type of smoke. I wasw a smoker for 57 years at 3+ packs a day. Sorry to say I didn't know how bad I stunk and how much it affected others. Now I do and I opologize to all those I offended with my smelly cigs. Get with the program , it's becomeing a thing of the past. it's 2013 and people want a smoke free environment to eat in. It's been proven a smoke free environment brings in more customers. Have a good day. Now I have to find a smoke free crab house, which there are. I might have to travel to N. Myrtle Beach, but I at least will know that I will enjoy my crabs because I will be able to taste them and not think I'm smoking a cigaret. Have a good day.

Backfinz is great place... Ric and Laura (the owners) DO NOT treat the locals any better that anyone else as someone previously wrote.....the service and staff are excellent....the food is excellent....and as far as smoking in the restaurant....it's in the bar area only and the place is big enough for all you non-smokers....only the northerners seem to complain about this!! Some people aren't happy unless they have something to complain about apparently.....THE CRABS ARE EXCELLENT.....I am originally from Baltimore so I know about great steamed crabs, and Backfinz is the best in the Myrtle Beach area!

DO NOT READ THE BAD REVIEWS!!!!I am a former Maryland resident and anyone that knows Maryland steamed crabs knows that you cant just get them anywhere!!! We have searched and searched since moving to NC over 6 yrs ago and a 4 hr trip vs a 7.5 hr trip to Md is it!!! We found Backfinz on the internet and we drove that 4 hrs to meet the best hard working staff EVER!!! I was so glad to find them and sit and eat crabs for 30.00 all u can eat and check out all the Baltimore Colts Orioles and Raven pics on the wall! So go there and judge for yourself before reading the negatives!! I love you guys and will take the trip as I have for 2 yrs now just for your crabs, get a room and come home the next day!!! Stay in Myrtle!!!!!!!We LOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOU!!!!!!!

Everything I heard it would be. A friend of ours from Maryland recommended we try this place. I never heard of it so needless to say I was very excited to try it out because I used to live in the Baltimore area (Towson) and I missed steamed crabs. When we got there I could see people cracking open crabs at their table and realized that I came to the right place. Once we got seated my wife ordered the crab cake platter and I got the all you can eat crabs. We also ordered the crab dip appetizer while we waited for my crabs to be steamed. The crab dip was very good. It came with old bay already in it but I like a lot which was nice because I noticed they have old bay on every table. Our food came out about 25 min later and it was awesome. The crabs were as good as they are in Maryland and my wife couldn't stop talking about how good her crab cake was. We were there for about 2 hours. The owner came over and introduced himself while I worked on my crabs. Very friendly staff and owner. My wife and I will definitely be back. If you like steamed crabs and crab cakes the way its done in Maryland then check this place out!

We LOVE Backfinz! It is THE place to watch Ravens games. We bought a home in Surfside a year ago, but had been vacationing in the area for years prior to that. The new place in Garden City is fabulous. My only complaint is the smoking. Now that it is banned in Maryland, I've gotten used to a smoke free environment. Maybe someday ...

Drove an hour to go to Backfinz for the Ravens/St. Louis game - 9/25/11. It was so very cool to see all of the Ravens fans there. Had to leave at half time because the smoke was so bad in the place. Service was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! Waited the entire first half of the game to get steamed crabs and then the waitress said we hadn't ordered them. Then, she came back and said they gave our large crabs away and only have mediums left. Soup was cold and service was only good by the kids bussing the tables. We won't be going back again.

Awesome! I haven't had blue crabs in years. Just as I remember them from 1979. Note to visitors to MB, Backfinz has moved. They are just before the Garden City Furniture Store going south on Hwy 17, right side of the road. Not a big sign, but it's worth finding it.

I am surprised about some of the negative previous reviews. My wife and I who are from the Baltimore/Glen Burnie, MD area was informed about Backfinz by my sister (who use to work with the owner before he retired from the Postal Service in Maryland). When we went there last year (July of 2010), we were treated well by the staff, and the crab cake sandwiches we bought were fairly priced and with "REAL" crab meat (not fillers that are usually in pretend crab cakes, and were seasoned like we are use to getting in the better crab places at home (i.e. Romano's in Glen Burnie). There were other persons and groups there with Maryland ties, and they did not appear to have any problems with the whole crabs they were ordering. Before we left the place, we asked for and met the owner, who was pleasant. We are sorry that we were not able to get back there this year since we wanted to try other restaurants in northern Myrtle Beach (i.e. Rioz, near Broadway At The Beach and The Giant Crab).

Our experience at Backfinz was wonderful. Half of our party of 10 was from lower Delaware so we had pretty high expectations of what a crab house should be. The others had no experience eating hard crabs or what to expect. Rick, the owner and Laura the manager took great care of us even teaching the novices how to crack the crabs. The atmosphere was low key and perfect for a large party. We had the dozen large hard crabs, one order of all you can eat medium crabs, a pound of steamed shrimp, crab cakes, mixed seafood plate and a child's order. Everything was fantastic; authentic Maryland crabs served on butcher block paper. This was our favorite dining experience in Myrtle Beach.

As a former Marylander, I have had to wait for yearly pilgrimages back to MD for trays of steamed crabs each summer during our Ocean City MD vacation. I've lived in upstate SC for 20 years now and this has been our tradition. This year we changed to Myrtle Beach in order to save money. I took a chance and looked up maryland steamed crabs online and found backfinz. I was not disappointed! Crabs came in fresh at 530. We arrived at 6. Immediately seated at a roomy booth and were quickly met by a server. Maybe it was all the MD memorabilia I was checking out or the TV in the booth that kept the kids occupied but I never recall waiting around very long for anything. In fact, we were checked on by no less than 3 servers making sure our drinks were full and we had enough of the all-you-can-eat crabs. Absolutely the next best thing to being in a Baltimore crab house. Sure beats the drive.

we just bought a place in Myrtle Beach in Nov. of '09!Love the area and all the people,so friendly. Then we went to backfinz, and met the waitress from HELL! This blond,so called waitress also claimed to be the manager! We ordered crabs for $38.00 a dozen, the special is $30.00 for all you can eat. We got our bill and she OVER CHARGED us, we questioned it but since she the manager thats the way it is.We also had burgers, very thin, i ordered mine medium rare, it looked like a hockey puck!!!,there was a bit of green, think it was lettuce, there wasn't enough to tell! the red could have been tomato, i ordered it with lettuce and tomato. BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID IF YOU GO THERE!!!!!!!!!,you too, may experince the waitress/manager from HELL and her overcharging rath! NEVER AGAIN!!!! loose your manager or you will go out of business like the last owners!!!

The service at this restaurant is absolutely HORRIBLE. I am from Maryland and grew up on crab houses in Southern Maryland. My in-laws live locally in Conway, SC, so several times a year we go to Backfinz for crabs. The service is always very slow, but during our visit on 7/16/10 the service was just unacceptable. We called ahead of time to make sure they have crabs (we've been there before when they don't have crabs, so always call ahead) and we made a reservation for 8 people. When we arrived, they did not have a table ready for us. They told us it would be a half hour wait before the crabs were ready, so we ordered drinks and appetizers. Our waitress forgot several things we ordered, so we had to remind her several times. After about a 45 minute wait, a tray of 12 crabs were brought out for 7 of the 8 people in our party to share. Then no more trays of crabs came out. We finally complained and were told the crabs would be out in 10 more minutes, but we had heard that all evening and no longer wanted to wait so we asked for our check. Our waitress added an 18% gratuity to our tabs, but we did not want to pay this amount of gratuity for lousy service, so we told her we would not be paying gratuity. She then said we HAD TO pay the gratuity and threatened to call the police if we didn't. She finally relented and took it off the bill. Our waitress treated us horribly like it was our fault for the bad service. If you go to Backfinz, be aware that you will wait a very long time for crabs. My recommendation would be to go to Dirty Dicks in N. Myrtle Beach instead of Backfinz. The food and service are both very good at Dirty Dicks and they have crabs.

Rick, the owner, is from Maryland and prepares his seafood in the authentic Maryland style which is far superior to the bland SC food. Steamed crabs, crab cakes, etc. are as good as any MD joint. Backfinz has moved to a larger place on US17-Business, about 1 1/2 miles north o the old Murells Inlet spot. We go there to watch Ravens games on Rick's TVs that are from the 70's. Let's hope he upgrades the TVs in his new spot. Rick is not a grouch at all, a very nice guy but low keyed. He loves cops, military and firefighters so if you're one of those, do stop in. If you are a Ravens fan, by all means come in...no Steelers fans at all! Maryland style seafood all the time!

I love the place. The "down home" atmosphere makes it even more special. For those of you who are complaining, maybe you should reconsider. I think they all do a great job. We love coming here. We've been to many more "upscale" restaurants, but we like this one better. You should remember that oftentimes you are treated in response to the way you treat others. Maybe you should be nicer yourself. I've had to wait a LONG time at your supposedly "upscale" restaurants. Maybe the problem is you, not them.

Backfinz was hands down the greatest restraunt that i know who owns. so all of you no life people writing bad reviews on here need to listen up. they make all of there food from fresh products so it takes more time to make. (Blank)(im not allowed to say) is the head chef and he is one of the greatest cooks in this world. it takes so long to make it because he prepares every meal himself. its 1 guy making all of the food. so when your moaning and groaning over how amazing the food is then you can give your thanks to the head chef. its pricey but worth it when you take the time to look into how your food is made then you realize its worth it. also they specialize in maryland crabs so if you dont like maryland crabs then why go there. think before you act and say all of these bad things. realization comes into play in T-minus NOW. be fortunate that you have the luxury to go to these restraunts.

After reading some negative reviews, and being from Chicago I was a bit worried about visiting this restaurant, but OMG best food I have had anywhere. You really will love this place if you love a REALLY good crab cake. We did visit with locals, and I'm not sure how that affected service, but ours was attentive, friendly and an all around great experience. The Shrimp, blue crabs, and crab cakes were out of this world. The owner came and talked to us, and was very friendly. we are in town for 5 more days, and I can't wait to eat here again before we drive home 16 hours. Go and experience this delicious restaurant

We visited the old building May of 09 the building was old, however they have a brand new building on Kings Hwy heading into Myrtle Beach. When we got there we were greeted with a friendly staff, I ordered ayce blue crabs, OMG awesome! They took approximately 20 minutes to cook, but before I was done with the first dozen another dozen was brought out. I'd have to say that we received excellent service our drinks stayed full, the food was hot and delicious. My husband got chicken fingers and french fries outstanding, he also got a slice of cheesecake which was really good. We are not locals in Myrtle Beach, we love in Charleston, SC but we will make that drive just to eat there!

OMG !!! Heard this place was great, like home away from home for Maryland crab lovers, but hold your horses. The owner Ric and his daughter put the locals first. If you are visiting from out of town stay away. Do not expect fast service, over 1 1/2 hours for crabs, and they will not serve the food at the same time for everyone in your party. The young kids they have serving the food are nice, friendly and apologetic for the grumpy manager and owner. Does not feel like you are welcomed, unless you are a local that spends your time at the bar kissing butt with the manager. Stay away, trust me, you will not miss out on anything. Could have made better crab cakes myself with buying crabs in a can and making my own, waste of time and money.

Backfinz was a horrible experience. While the food was good (really missed the blue crabs), the service was horrible. Took 2 hours to receive food and some never received theirs at all. They had the reservation for over a month prior to the date however, they put the settup in the back storage section and did not have enough mallots or silverware. One might be able to overlook the length of time for crabs since it does take awhile and our group was large however, management was the worst experience ever encountered. Would say that they seemed to treat the local patrons well so I would conclude that if you are local and visit often - high recommend; otherwize stay away - far away!

I will never return! I agree wth one poster who said the manager, the daughter of the owner, was rude and was not at all concerned about her customers. The entire staff looked tired and not really wanting to be there! It just seemed like the worst atmosphere ever! Had the all you can eat crabs, yes they were good but they were dumped on the table in front of us and there was really no elbow room to eat and enjoy! It was a mess. I believe they should tear down the building and try again. The restaurant was dingy and smelled "old". I would not spend my money there again as I feel I could enjoy a great dinner somewhere else for what I paid! A mess! Maybe the owner should fire his daughter and take it over himself?!!!!

Well the place is nothing to write home about and the service is not good. The food was good though. One had the Fried Shrimp which was fried almost overdone but the shrimp had a good taste. Another had the Steak and Crab Cake. Steak was good, cooked as ordered (medium rare) and Crab cake was filled with crab no filler. Last Dinner had the all you can eat crabs for 30.00 which is a great price. The server said they were small and medium. These were small crabs but had a lot of meat and tasted good. If you come here be prepared to wait, service is SLOW and not all that good. Food was good but besides the All you can eat Crabs was a bit pricey. The tables and chairs are plastic but a good quality. The whole place is nothing to look at but not dirty.

I have traveled over over the world and have eaten in many resturants. Never in my life have I been treated with total disrespect. I waited for over an hour for my crabs and was told that they would be out any minute, well the any minute turned into two hours. Other members in the party who had ordered food other then crabs were served within 30 minute or never received their food. The night manger was a complete waste of time to even talk to. It appeared to me that if you were a local you received your food in a timely manner, but if they didn't know you, you went to the end of the line. I would rate this place because I would never call it a restaurant the worst dinning expierence I have ever had.

Worst place EVER! We had a family reunion and half our family waited 2 hours for food that never came. We asked to talk to the manager who turned out to be the daughter of the owner, and she shouldnt have been managing a restroom let alone a business. She was rude, unprofessional and did not care about customer service. We had family in from Europe and she actually had the nerve to say "go back to Europe" when we expressed the disappointment with the service. Rude management and waiting hours for your food that is overpriced and may not ever come...

My wife and I moved from Kent Island, Maryland to Myrtle Beach two years ago. The thing we miss most from back home are the blue crabs, crab cakes, and shrimp. A neighbor of ours who also used to live in Maryland told us about a family owned restaurant called Backfinz. We decided to try it out and the food was out of this world. The blue crabs were even better (and a LOT cheaper) then the ones we used to get at home. The crab cakes were delicious and hands down the best crab cakes you will find anywhere outside of Maryland. The shrimp were steamed and seasoned perfectly, just like you would get back home in Maryland. The owner Ric, and his daughter Laura run the restaurant and are very nice people. Ever since our first visit to backfinz we have been eating there at least 6 times a month. We just can't get enough of it. This is the BEST seafood restaurant by far in this area and we recommend it to everybody we talk to. If you haven't been to Backfinz, you have no idea what you're missing!

We had had crab cakes and crabs and were blown away at how good they were, the place is a little small but clean and friendly. We will be back in EVERY time we visit Myrtle Beach. Great job guys!

We heard so much about how their crabcakes were great, however we were somewhat disappointed. They were all crab meat but very little flavor. We also were very disappointed in the overall cleanliness of the place, the unpleasant odors and the price of the food which was substantially higher than the menu posted on their web site. Finally the restrooms were not fit for use. We certainly will not visit there again. By the way, we lived in Maryland prior to moving to this area and know what real Maryland crabcakes are.

The food was tremendous. We got the all you can eat crabs, steamed shrimp, and crab dip to start off. The shrimp were pretty good size and steamed with a lot of old bay and onions just the way i like it. The crabs were the best I've had in a long time and I live in Maryland. Very good size crabs for all you can eat. The service was great. Laura, the owners daughter, waited on us and she did a great job. Heather also took good care of us and she's cute as a button! The atmosphere is what it is. This place is full of baltimore memorabilia which makes us Marylanders feel at home. Our bill was half of what it would be if we went to a crab house in Maryland. Cheap beer and steamed crabs will keep me coming back everytime. If you love steamed crabs the way they should be steamed then Backfinz is a must to go visit.

We have been searching the Grand Strand for years trying to find a restaurant that serves steamed blue crabs. We had crabs, shrimp, and crab cakes and they were all amazing, some of the best we'd ever had. The staff was very fun and friendly and now Backfinz is a MUST everytime we visit the strand.
