Review: Very impressive atmosphere but definitely overrated food. Not a good value. The waitress had her nose in the air during our visit. Our bill was $135 for 2 adults and 1 child. Won't be back.

Review: The food was quite good but overpriced a bit (not a ton, just a little). Service was a bit slow as they seemed understaffed. Had to wait for drinks, for follow-up and just in general. Had to ask a different wait for a drink refill sicne my waiter was nowhere to be found. Portion size was very average if not a little below-average on my shrimp and seafood pasta dish, but very good-tasting.
I would go here again but the service isn't super-fast -- be forewarned. Atmosphere is nice. They need to pay more attention to the guests and/or acquire a larger waitstaff.

Review: We had been to Thoroughbreds previously and the food was expensive, but good. so when we needed a special date night, we decided to get dressed up and go. We were seated prompted, but did not feel welcomed. The bacon wrapped scallops were delicious (if not over priced), but it went down hill from there. I had the shrimp and grits on a previous visit and it was memorable, so we both ordered that. It was less than mediocre and less than spectacular for the price. The bread was awful and the salads stingy (the poppy dressing was good). I ordered a house wine and the waiter tried to charge me for an up brand. The service was spartan and we felt like we were more of an imposition than guests paying a lot of money for a special night out. Don't waste your money...not worth it.

Review: We have been to the Thoroughbred restaurant many times in years past. On a recent visit, the food was superior as usual as was the atmosphere, however the service, perhaps because it was a slow night, was slow and distracted. It was therefore much of a surprise to see that our group of six was faced with a 20% non-discretionary tip charge. This appears to be a newly intriduced policy. When reserving dinner next time, we`ll decline to attend Thoroughbred if not afforded the opportunnity to tip according to the level of service received.

Review: My wife and I took our friends to dinner and had a fabulous time. Had drinks in the bar during Happy Hour, and must say didn't want to leave. Bartender was fun and started the dinner experience off right, AND HOW AFFORDABLE, ( 12 drinks for $36.00). The happy hour menu looked great, however we were saving room for dinner. Our waiter was excellent, and attentive as was the manager who checked on us. Being from New York, this restaurant matches some of the finest we have eaten in. My wife fell in love with Thoroughbred's and we know we will be back

Review: My husband & I went with reservations for the Thanksgiving buffet. Overall it was a pleasant dinner and not too noisy. But I remember much higher quality food when we went two years ago and our waitperson was much more interested in her children who were seated at a nearby table so our service was slow. For example, we waited a long time for wine (for her to get a cork screw), and a long time for coffee (for clean dishware). The used dinnerware was not removed as the meal progressed. The turkey slices were thin and dry. I was mentioning our disappointment to local who said that the restaurant ownership had changed since we were there two years ago. So...in summary, we do not plan to return to Thorourghbreds.

Review: Disappointing, especially the service: waitress very unfriendly, terse and inattentive. Ordered baked potato, got mashed. Long wait between courses: +/- 20 minutes, even though restaurant only half-filled. A $33 entree was listed on the bill erroneously --- corrected only after one of the waiters saw me examining it. Ordered a glass of wine --- never got it.

Review: Pricey, but well worth it. The waitstaff was very attentive to our every need. Everything was excellent from the drinks through dessert. The steaks were of the highest quality and the price reflected it. They were on par with Capitol Grille, Del Frisco's, Morton's, etc. We will definitely return on our next visit to Myrtle Beach.

Review: The food was average. Booth seating was uncomfortable. The waiter refilled water glasses for several tables and touched each glass with the pitcher possibly passing germs. Never again will we go there.

Review: This was a Valentine's Day, 7:30pm reservation, so I will try to account for the holiday crush. That said:
We arrived promptly at 7:30 and were seated immediately. Restaurant was busy, but nowhere near overcrowded. It took quite a few minutes for our server to arrive with menus, and another 10 to receive a wine list. Understandable that they were in short supply on V-day. The bar staff made errors on both my wife's and my cocktails.
Skipped appetizers in anticipation of dessert, bread was excellent and plentiful, salads reasonable. My wife had the petite filet and crab cake. The filet was rather more rare than the ordered medium rare, the crab cake was excellent. I had the grilled pork chops with mango chutney. Mediocre. The chops had been grilled over much too high heat - the grill marks were charcoal and the edges of the chops overcooked, dry and tough. The chutney was just a few chunks of mango tossed with onion. I was excited about the "jamaican jerk sweet potatoes," but they turned out to be bland sweet potato strings, some charred black.
Dessert was a signature several layer chocolate thing, it was not made in house and appeared to be basically a pyramid of chocolate mousse covered in ganache. Uninspired and generic, two adjectives that really sum up the menu as a whole. This is typical of fine dining on the Grand Strand, likely to cater to risk-averse older diners and vacationers with a limited comfort zone. Some area restaurants do outstanding traditional American fare (Parson's Table, Library), Thoroughbred's underwhelms.
The wine list is excellent and many selections offer excellent value for the money. This is unusual at Thoroughbred's. We enjoyed an outstanding Beaujolais for $30.
Our server was knowledgeable, experienced, and courteous. The restaurant is lovely, but the menu does not offer good value for the money. I suspect that many of the rave reviews come from locals who have not experienced top-tier dining outside of the area. This restaurant charges comparable prices to fine big-city dining, but does not deliver the expected quality. We are not likely to return.

Review: We made reservations 1-1/2 months prior to new years eve, it took us over an hour to get seated the hostess's are old rude dirt bags and we are not going back. They over booked dinner service, over 50 people left due to having to wait so long. This was the worst dinner service we ever had. When you go into a restaurant of that caliber you never expect to be treated like crap!!

Review: Made last minute reservations for New Year's Eve for 5:00pm. Was seated upstairs in what I guessing is normally used for a banquet room. I understood this because of the lateness of our reservation request. Four of us ordered Sea Bass (Fabulous), NY Strip (Best that my wife said she has ever had), Surf & Turf (Lobster a bit over cooked) and Filet (very good). Table-side Caesar salad was outstanding. Service was super before and during the meal. Once dishes were cleared, it was like we didn't exist anymore. No offer of beverage refills, no offer of desert menu or after dinner drinks. Finally after about 15 minutes, when our server walked by my wife said that we'd like Banana Foster. Still no offer of a desert menu or beverage refill. Server said they only did the Banana Foster for 2 or more. My wife looked around and pleasantly said that she believed there were 4 of us at the table. About 10 minutes later the server brought the table to prepare the desert then another 10 minutes to get the ingredients. It was great when finally served. At no time were there more than 5 tables with patrons in the room with us. Two servers should have had no problem with that. A fantastic experience except for the after meal service.

Review: I went with my fiance for our anniversary. It is a great place to go if you want a classy one on one dinner with your significant other. When we got there we immediately got seated, although it was a the complete back of the restaurant where the people come out of the kitchen. I didn't even have room to hold my menu in front of me. I was in a very scrunched up table. I was very unhappy about that. When we got settled a guy came over and set our napkins in our laps and poured us some water. After about five minutes, our waiter came and brought us our menus. He then asked us if we'd like to see the wine list and we said no, then he asked if we'd like to have a cocktail, then we said no, then he just walked off. Now me and my fiance aren't 21 yet but I'd like to get a diet pepsi or something other than water. Afterwards we both ordered the 8 oz. filet mignon and mashed potatoes and I got a salad but he didn't. First, the bread they brought out, it was good but it wasn't amazing. Then my salad, the ranch that came with it was awesome, but the salad, was just not my forte. I ate the cucumbers and the croutons and then the only real lettuce I saw. Then the steak came out. My steak was completely burnt on one side and my fiance's was a little burnt but not all the way. After I cut the top off, the steak was absolutely amazing. The mashed potatoes were so good too. But other than that everything else was grand. I would highly suggest it but ask them not to seat

Review: We have been to this restaurant in 2006 and everything was wonderful. The service was outstanding that year. There were 4 of us and we were seated in an fairly intimate part of the restaurant. The waiter was amazing. When we saw liver on the menu my husband inquired and was told it was excellent. It WAS. We returned in 2007, the same four. Our table was in an area with large groups. The noise level was not welcome for our meal. Since there were 2 large parties our poor waiter had little time for us and we had to wait a LONG time for service and there was a wine that they were out of and a main course they didn't have. If we go this year we will be sure to ask for a specific area to dine in. The food is great!

Review: Fantastic. My wife and I were seated immediately. The waiter was very attentive. Since we're both big seafood lovers, we both had the shrimp and grits...OUTSTANDING. The best we've ever had in any restaurant thus far. The atmosphere was nice, but we almost thought as though we did not belong because so many people were dressed up and we were in jeans and sneakers. Almost like a country club atmosphere but the hostess let us know that we were fine as we were. The only down-side was that we had our 1 year old (who was asleep) and it doesn't seem like the kid-type of place.

Review: No wonder this place has earned one of the best on the beach. You won't find a better steak anywhere, nor a more romantic place. We dined here for our anniversary and were shown every possible attention to detail. Make sure you ask for a table in the library next to the fireplace. The coffee encrusted steaks are amazingly fork tender. The house dressing is a must. The attentiveness of our waiter set the bar for all others to be measured by. It's a bit pricey, but well worth it for what you get. This definitely the place for romance and special nights out. You won't be disappointed.

Review: This is one of the better fine dining restaurants on the Grand Strand. The atmosphere is no doubt one of the best. Thouroughbreds' beef selections are good, but I do think they're slightly overpriced. I undestand that this is a fine dining restaurant, but I just don't feel the portions justify the cost of some of the beef dishes.

Review: We made reservations more than two weeks in advance for a party of four for Christmas Eve. When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk for a while. When we finally got seated, it was upstairs in a large room which looked like it was set up for large parties, or for an overflow crowd. The
room was uncomfortably cold, and the food in addition to coming out cold, was not what was described on the menu.
The waiter explained that what was on the menu was no longer provided. It would have been nice to have been made aware of that fact before we ordered. There were a few large parties with children running around, but no management person present seemed to care about it.
We normally would come to the Thoroughbred for special occasions and holidays, and in the past, have not been disappointed; however, this last incident has seriously altered our thinking for the future.
When one comes to dine at the Thoroughbred, it's assumed that attention to detail goes without saying. Someone missed the boat this time around.

Review: I took my mother-in-law and my husband's aunt and uncle and we were thrilled with the service and the food. The atmosphere is wonderful and relaxing! We asked for a tour as it is much larger inside than it appears on the outside and they were gracious enough to grant my request during a very busy dinner rush. We were very impressed with the establishment, the servers and the management - and the food was succulent!
Absolutely must visit if going to Myrtle Beach!!

Review: We had dinner here the on Wednesday September 13. The steak was the best I have had anywhere. Recommend the house salad dressing and the bread on the table was great. The service was incredible. It was a little steep in price, but we knew that going in. Not a place to take children, but if a great romantic getaway dinner would fit into someone's vacation plans - this is the place. (as soon as we walked in - I thought that it would have been a great place for a proposal!

Review: This is my all time favorite place to dine in Myrtle Beach. I make it a point to go there every time I'm at the coast and have never gotten anything from the menu that wasn't excellent. The servers are the most gracious and accomodating and the desserts are absolutely delicious. If Rocky Fretz is entertaining there, that's a definite plus.

This has got to be the most romantic place to eat.
Definitely a top notch restaurant. This will be our special night out place on our future trips to Myrtle Beach. Thanks again Thoroughbreds for a memorable evening!

Review: Our favorite high-end restaurant in Myrtle Beach!
The atmosphere is elegant, but not ostentatious. This is my place to savor a serious filet, but dining companions have raved about entrees from all sections of the menu.
For reference, I regard Thoroughbreds to be comparable to a Smith & Wollensky steakhouse franchise.
P.S. - They offer a very nice Children's Menu. However, this is one of the few restaurants to which we would never bring our own youngsters, because we don't want them to distract us from our enjoyment of the wonderful food & ambience. (...perhaps the previous reviewer should have hired a babysitter!)

Review: We went with our 6 and 4 year old. We promissed the 4 year old a baked potato but they only have mashed potatos and couldn't accomodate our request. That was a bit of a dissapointment. This would lead you to think that the mashed potatoes would be a house specialty but they weren't - they were slightly cool and were supposed to have chives but instead there were green onions snips on the side that were about 1-2 inches in length. They used an ice-cream scoope which made me think of a cafeteria. There was no butter in them either from what I could tell...just very bland. The wine was room temp and should have been served chilled - surprising since they are a 2005 Wine Spectator winner. The house salad was good and their house dressing is one to try! The steak was cooked to order - medium rare, the sauce was good too (bernaise). Deserts sounded good but catered to the tastes of an adult palate...nothing wrong with that but there wasn't anything we could have gotten for the kids that would have captured their attention long enough for us to enjoy desert too. We've always wanted to try Thoroughbreds and since we have, I doubt we will go back. It was adequate, nothing to write home about.
The restaurant was very clean. The interior decor is very nice as is the ladies bathroom. The bar looked warm and inviting.
