We make it a point to visit TarBaby's whenever we are in NMB. They have the best southern breakfast buffet! I also love the looks people show when they see my TarBaby's T-Shirt, or coffee mug. Who Cares?! I Love their breakfast! Was a bit disappointed with their selection of fruits on their bar when we were there last month. Oh well, it's all about the biscuits & gravy, pancakes, and fried pork products - Yum! Be prepared to stand in line - outside.... They stay busy!

It has been a couple of years since my family & I have ate there. We are planning on visiting Myrtle Beach late August and I can assure you that Tar Babies is on my list of definite to do's. Never have I ate at a place with the quality of breakfast, service, and low country charm as this place!! We are looking much forward to our visit!!

I have never eaten at this place, but I plan to in a few weeks when I go down to NMB. I cannot believe how very stupid people still are today in 2010, it amazes me to no end. North Carolina is the TAR HEEL state, they are THE NORTH CAROLINA TARHEELS!!!! GO HEELS!!! I didn't know the story of the tar baby until I read the reviews, but I would have NEVER thought that it was racist in anyway. Seriously, this is "like so highschool" already and like "the first one smelt it dealt it". It is just plain silly. I don't think that any WHITE person like me has any right to say if the African Americans should be offended by the TAR BABY, dumb, dumb!!! This is one of the reasons that we as Americans (white, black, brown, purple, gray, etc.) cannot seem to be AMERICANS anymore. It is a sad, sad day. However, it will be a great day when my family and I eat at the TAR BABY!!!! I will have a biscuit for the dumbasses of the world and say a little FU to them as I drink my glass of milk in the TAR HEEL STATE that has a place to eat called TAR BABY!!!! I am so there!!!

Im going to address this "racism" thing once and for all. YES you are right, it is a little racist. This restaurant was built during a time period when that kind of thing was normal and not looked down upon. However, it's more the story, Uncle Remus's Tales of the Old South, which by today's standards would be TOYALLY unacceptable. However, that was then, and this is now. Are we supposed to forget that part of our history? Tar Baby's welcomes folks of ALL color, and employees people of all color. The past is just that, the past. They took something that could have been negative and turned it into something positive and novelty.

We had been seated for about 10 minutes. Our waitress had no clue that we were even there.Another waitress pointed out to her that we had been there about 10 minutes, and she need to take our order. Our waitress stated"well, they can f***ing wait."She eventually came and got our drink order.By the way,the drinks come in a 10 oz plastic cup and refills are $1.25.The food was cold and dried out.sausage was pink in the middle.DO NOT EAT HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO SPEND $25 FOR COLD FOOD.The management expressed their sorrow in the way of NOTHING.

Have been going to Tar Babys with my family for well over 10 yrs with my family every year we vacation in the area. The buffet is awesome. This is just an establishment that has been in business for many years and know how to run a restaurant. The breakfast bar even has fried fatback. Everything is hot and fresh and the service is great. Don't miss out on the experience. The name may offend some, but get over it and have a great breakfast.

If you can't get over the name, then you are living in the past, we stopped to eat there and it ROCKED, we stopped mainly for the name and to take a picture. If you did some research you would be shocked to hear the actual history behind it, non racist, its also a racist term, but if you haven't got to the point where racism is actually funny then you have no sense of humor. big deal, get over, you don't see white people get pissed when you call us crackers but we say sopmething and you get pissed? WTF!?!?!?! I digress, humorous name and picture, great service and food.

What a bunch of up-tight a..holes to find a name offensive. This is culture and tradition that can't be pushed aside. Racism was officially dead when the president was elected, but has re-emerged since his inaguration. You can't push everything away because someone wants to feel offended, when none is intended. Go eat at the restaurant, the food is great, the people are great. Be the all-inclusive people you like to think you are. Congratulations on having one of the best Myrtle Beach Breakfast spots a person can find.

First off, shut-up with the racist crap already. I just went and there were planty of African Americans both working and eating there. It's a complete non-issue for them and it is for me. Now, the breakfast bar was really nice. It did have a lot of food and good variety too. It was $8.95 for adults. The atmosphere was ok, a bit dated. But, the food was good, the place was clean, and it wasn't smoky like the Biscuit Shack is. my family and I will go back again. BTW, the wait staff was exceptionally friendly and provided great service to my family and I.

I've been going to MB for Bike Week for quite a few years....you don't have to go to The Tar Baby to find racism in mrytle beach...it's EVERYWHERE. My husband wanted to move there...I told him that he had to be kidding. I couldn't live with so many bigots surrounding me. People acutally still say "colored." MB is a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

I meant, a tale from the famous *collections* of great African-American authors. The Tale of the Tar Baby was originally passed on orally by its author, and not captured in writing until 1881. Until then, most of white America did not know of this great original American parable.

The food was plentiful and well prepared. I'm not much of a breakfast person, but there's enough on the buffet to find something you like (pork chops for instance). The biscuits, pancakes and Belgian waffles were all good, and I was happy to see corned beef hash, cheese grits and red eye gravy available. There are other breakfast buffets in the Myrtle Beach area, but this one just has a lot more of a local character to it. Good food, fair price, and souvenir cups with the iced tea. What's not to like? Give it a chance before you make a judgment based solely on your own ignorance.

I have been going there the last 14 years (thanks to my husband of 13 years) has been going to tar babys since I think 1972 or 1977. You people who have a problem with the name need to grow up and get a real life its know wonder our country is in such a mess. If u dont like the name then what are u going in for, I can promise u will not hurt their feelings or their business! they are good people not only that they have probably been there longer than some of u idiot gripers were even thought about..

We have been to Tar Baby's several times when we've visited Cherry Grove. Food is all great. Bufett has excellent choices. Service is friendly and efficient. As for the name, what difference does it make? I don't like my Uncle Luigi, would that stop me from eating at a restaurant called Luig's. Am allergic to Magnolia's, but I'd sill eat in the restaurant of that name. Get over it people. Go for the food

We go everytime we are down there and its open. And for all the dumb people out here here you go: "Tar-Baby was a doll made of tar and turpentine, used to entrap Br'er Rabbit in the second of the Uncle Remus stories. The more that Br'er Rabbit fought the Tar-Baby, the more entangled he became. In contemporary usage, "tar baby" refers to any "sticky situation" that is only aggravated by additional contact. The only way to solve such a situation is by separation.[1]" (this came from the wikipedia) Story In one tale, Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear construct a doll out of a lump of tar and dressed it with some clothes. When Br'er Rabbit comes along he addresses the tar "baby" amiably, but receives no response. Br'er Rabbit becomes offended by what he perceives as the Tar Baby's lack of manners, kicks it, and in doing so becomes stuck. Now that Br'er Rabbit is stuck, Br'er Fox ponders how to dispose of him. The helpless, but cunning, Br'er Rabbit pleads, "Please don't throw me in the briar patch," prompting Fox to do exactly that. As rabbits are at home in thickets, the resourceful Br'er Rabbit escapes. Using the phrases "please don't throw me in the briar patch" and "tar baby" to refer to the idea of "a problem that gets worse the more one struggles against it" became part of the wider culture of the United States in the mid-20th century. The story was originally published in Harper's Weekly by Robert Roosevelt; years later Joel Chandler Harris wrote of the tar baby in his Uncle Remus stories. A similar tale from African folklore in Ghana has the trickster Anansi in the role of Br'er Rabbit.(this also came from wikipedia) Really People look something up and learn from it don't get jump to think of the bad. There may be more to it then what you think you see. Tar Baby came form a book that was Folklore

much of the feedback is because of the name ..If it was called Uncle Remus' would that change things. If the place was up north they would burn it down. This a side, the food is good , reasonble , plentiful and the wait staff work very hard. Give it a break ( if you can ).

My wife and I have been visiting Cherry Grove SC for many years. We only recently visited the restaurant. We have always found the name to be offensive and is probably maintained in an effort to deter african americans from dining. I noticed some of your respondents indicate you have diverse staff working there. This is little comfort since plantation houses also had plenty of blacks cooking, cleaning and serving food. There is no way I would take my grandchildren there to eat. Though the food is good, the concept is degrading to me, my family and many others in our society. This is 2009 and a time for the old thought processes to change. South Carolina has long resisted racial equality and it manifests itself in establishments like yours.

Damn good food! Used those biscuits to soak up my gravy and was smacking my lips during the whole meal. We go to this place every time we leave the beach. Still don't understand the morons who don't like the name. The staff is diverse...hell, my waitress looked better than Michelle Obama in a thong bikini! She even winked at me a few times. Since I always go there and don't see anything wrong with the name...just call me racist. There...now get over it!

My fiance first took me to Tar Babys last year and I loved it! He's been going there for breakfast since he was a kid. I would (and have) recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good Southern breakfast. I noticed that some people didn't like the name, but it doesn't bother me. It comes from an African-American folktale featuring characters like Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear. There is a mural in the restaurant showing a scene from Disney's "Song of the South," which tells the story of how Brer Fox tricked Brer Rabbit with a baby made of tar. Don't let the name keep you from enjoying this great Myrtle Beach attraction.

Any person in this day and age who would choose to eat at a restaurant named Tar Baby's is racist. It's not just the name but the image, as well. People in that community should feel shamed to live someplace with this sort of "restaurant." this is why the image of the ignorant, unintelligent and anti-intellecutal southerner persists..

Was introduced to this restaurant about three years ago by my younger brother. After living in this state for my entire thirty-something years this was the first time I had been any further north than batb. Anyway to make a long story a little less long, my brother kept telling me "we gotta go to Tar Baby's". Growing up in sc I was very familiar with the stories uncle remus so I never associated the name with any thing racist or non-p.c. ( I think that things like that are in the eye and mind of the beholder). I am however, a bit of a food snob so I was thinking that there was no way this place could live up to the hype that he had given it. Boy was I wrong. The food was excellent, as was the staff and atmosphere. I also walked away with a very special family memory, which for me is more important than anything. I will come back to this very special place everytime I visit nmb/cherry grove, which incidentally will be the first two weeks in july this year. Because as my little nephew so excitedly pointed out on my last visit "pamcakes! I looove pamcakes!" , and ain't that just right. See you at breakfast. Thanks bro.

Amazing resturant, easily my favorite breakfast restaurant in the south. The food is absolutely amazing, and being a buffet, is a great price. The only negative: it's usually very stuffy in the restaurant, but other than that, just perfect. You get in, have a great meal for the price, and get out. It's as simple as that. My favorite are the biscuits and sausage gravy, the porkchops, and the endless isles of bacons, eggs, and other breakfast favorites. They even provide souviner cups for the road. Over all, a 5* restaurant. And people griping about the name should just bypass it and not worry to rate it.

I can't believe that people in this country still use racial epithets and stereotypes, and think it's okay. Then THEY have the audacity to say things like "get over it" and "don't eat here". That's easy to say when it's not their image and likeness that's being charaterized in such a negative light. And can anyone tell me what "Tar Baby" has to do with a restaurant anyway? This is exactly why AMERICA and its citizens will never grow to its full potential as humans. Although it's a shame, it's also a true testiment about what America really is about. If there was a restaurant called "Honkey" or "Cracker" with an exagerrated epithet of a white person it would've be frowned upon, and rightfully so. Wake up people! Don't you know that this type of thing makes all AMERICANS look like immature, ignorant asses.

After reading all the glowing reviews, especially considering that two were less than a week old, we just had to try it. Maybe it was the time of day, or just a bad day, but we didn't have a great experience. I think it was around 11:15 in the morning. First thing I heard when we walked in the door was "Incoming", followed by an incredulous "You're kidding". Way to make ya feel welcome!

The famous breakfast bar was not set up. I was really disappointed. I was told they hadn't had enough customers to make it worthwhile. Seems last week they did, according to the reviews.

So,we had to order a la carte. It was ok, but little things that make a huge difference to me (like real butter instead of that spread stuff) were lacking. They did, at least, have real cream for the coffee upon request.

There was a fruit bar set up, but the waitress didn't acknowledge it was there, nevermind that it was included with the items we ordered, according to the menu. We wandered over and took a look. It all seemed to have come out of some big can somewhere, save some fresh cantelope. We passed.

Server was pleasant enough, but all in all it was a $20 disappointment.

Time to be seated was excellent because the food wasn't fit to eat. My family had always enjoyed the food and service in the past but no longer. We all had the buffet there was hardly any food, we had to wait on plates, the waitress came to our table only to bring our drink order the rest of the time I got our straws and napkins, my husband had to suck on ice to wash his food down. I expressed this to the cashier when he told me the bill was over $30.00, I was angry and let him know what a rip off at which point he knocked off $5.00. My son told me when we got out to the vehicle that TBaby's had new owners that's the reason it SUCKED. Well they'll never see me there again.

I love the buffet they have pretty much everything you can think of pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, biscuits, sausage..... For those of you concerned with the name it is not meant in a derogatory way. Do a little research before criticizing and give the food a try. Don't forget we have the Carolina Tar Heel and there's a story behind that one also.

We have been coming to Cherry Grove for over 25 years and never until this summer tried Tar Baby's and what a treat we were in for. The choices were incredible and food tasted great. If you can't find something for breakfast at Tar Baby's you might as well stay home and eat mush. Tar Baby's is now a regular on our visits to Cherry Grove ,make it yours.

Worst experience ever at a restaurant - I order buffet while in-laws, wife and 4 year old ordered from menu. The waitress supposedly fell in the kitchen with our order. My in-lwas got their food promptly while my wife and daughter waited 30-40 minutes for their food. Manager never made attempt to push our order quicker. At end of meal, we asked for a discount and waitress gave us a look and manager reluctantly gave us 10%. My wife expressed her displeasure and manager told her that we should have ordered from buffet.

Will NEVER go back.

Heard about it and had to try - will never go back. My wife and 4 year old ordered from menu as did my in-laws while I had buffet. The waitress supposedly fell with the order - my in-laws food still came promptly but waited over 40 minutes for my child's 1 pancake. Waitess and manager were extremely rude when we asked about a little discount for inconvenience. The manger reluctantly gave small discount after he told my wife that we should have ordered buffet not from menu.

The Biscuit Shack was a much better and personable place.

Will never go to Tar Baby's again and would tell our freinds not to dine their either.

As an African American I am offended by the name and I believe if one were to google that name one would come up with various racist results. I would never eat there and would petition all other people who aren't racist toward African Americans not eat or work there either.

Dude, everything about Tar Babys is awesome! My friends and I go there every time we are in Myrtle B. Everyone concerned about the name..needs to chill out and just eat some pancakes. No one around there cares about it so neither should you.

We went to Tar Babies on 7/20/07 for the Breakfast Buffet because we know many people who say you really need to go there. Don't listen to your friends. Literally one of the worst breakfasts we've ever had.
