South Island Steak House

Steak House Restaurant in Pawleys Island

This restaurant has closed
Well known restaurant entrepreneur, Mark Brinkley moves his talents and steak house menu from Murrells Inlet to Pawleys Island. Just a few miles south and you can sink your teeth into those mouth watering steaks and barbecue ribs. Wednesday night is "All you can eat rib night" The staff will make you feel like you are coming home. Unlike any other local steak restaurant, the ambience has an island flair. It makes you feel like you are stepping into Key West. Very casual and great for local's, vacationer's, golfer's and biker's alike. The walls are lined with art by artist Kimberly Dunn who has galleries all over the country carrying her work. Her work is also housed by "The House of Blues." You may even be able to experience Kimberly paiting while you eat dinner as she is known to do that from time to time.

Review: We heard that the best ribs in Myrtle Beach were actually in Pawley's Island. They were right. We went on Wednesday night for the all-you-can-eat ribs and they were GREAT!!. We will keep this on our list of favorites when we visit next year. The food was great and the price was great. Probably not many have heard of this place, but it is certainly worth the drive.

Review: Weary travellers and a rainy night, but this place was great. Had the best steak in a long time, perfectly cooked. Ribs were outstanding. Casual atmosphere with great food.Steak, Ribs, steak fries and cold beer. It was the night of tornado warnings up the coast a bit and we never noticed because we were enjoying our food so much. Didn't find this site till after trip was over and after reading reviews, maybe some that had a bad experience awhile back should give it another try. We'll be back.

Review: Nope, the reviews below extolling poor service and food are real, you just happened to be there on a good night.

I've been several times and after giving them 3 tries to get it right, I had to throw my hands up in the air and spend my money somewhere else.

Beer was Cold !!!

Review: We have eaten dinner at South Island Steak House before but this was our first time ever eating lunch. I have to rave about their added "blue plate lunch specials". My husband and I had huge plates of food for $6.00. It was the epitomy of home cooked, southern comfort food like my grandma cooked. I had the fried pork chops with mashed potates and gravey and fried okra and my husband had the meatloaf with green beans and mashed potates and gravey. I think the blue plates change every day as well as the side dishes. My kids had the seafood baskets. It was simply amazing. We are from the florence area but will be back when we visit the beach.

Review: Wow...all I can say is that my experience at the SISH was probably the WORST dining experience I have ever had on the Grand Strand. My steak had about as much fat as meat, and was 2 temperatures overcooked. Our server seemed to be bothered with the fact that she actually had to work. Our table had garbage under it, and the bathrooms were unacceptably dirty. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told it would be just a moment. Well after waiting for over twenty minutes and no manager in sight, my wife and I paid our bill and left.

Review: I wrote a review recently but it hasn't been posted yet. Just checking. Please post as this place was amazing. I ate there several nights in a row with my golf buddies and it was GREAT! Food was superb, service fantastic and atmosphere was very unique and well thought out. Not something you would find on every corner. It is a truly beautiful place. That is why we kept going back. I highly recommend it.

Review: I took my family to try the all you can eat ribs special. I am always suspicious when things seem to good to be true and that was surely the case here. this place is terrible. The ribs are dry and taste like they were bought frozen and re-heated and I really believe they were. The really worst part is watching the staff smoking cigaretts and handling food without washing thier hands. The dishes and silverware were also dirty. My beer was warm almost room tempature and the server told me they could not help it that much of the equipment was old and not working. I hate to write a bad review for any business but this pace is really bad. Gerry Guest, Pawleys Island

Review: I read the previous reviews and it appears somebody is not in touch with what good food is. This place serves bland cheap food. The ribs seem to be frozen and re-cooked and the steaks are a joke. Do not waste your time or money this palce is a dump! And oh yeah, the servers stand around and smoke and never wash thier hands. The bartender smokes and serves drinks at the same time. The health department needs to investigate.

Review: WOW!!!!!!!!! I ate at South Island three times this week with 32 of my golf buddies. We loved it so much that we went back night after night. This is a great place for golfers!!!! The steak and ribs are amazing, atmosphere is casual, not stuffy like so many of the other Pawleys Island restaurants. No offense, but we have been vacationing and golfing on the Grand Strand, for 20 years, and Pawleys needed a place for casual dining. Golf attire is fine and so is laughing out loud. The owner spoke with us, all three nights which made us feel appreciated. Everything we ordered, each night, was nothing less than mouth watering. It was great. I would recommend this restaurant to any golfer or patron. However, if you are looking for a place that puts a fancy sauce on everything and is a bit pretentious, it may not be for you. BUT, if you are looking for a place that makes you feel appreciated, with good food and service, South Island is the winner. Oh, THE RIBS WERE AMAZING!!!! Thanks South Island, we will see you soon Long Island, New York

Review: We frequent this restaurant all the time and it is definitely the locals favorite and best kept secret. The ribs are out of this world and they have the absolute best beef, I have ever had. It is incredible! Literally melts in your mouth and the ribs fall off the bone, they are sooooooo tender. My husband always gets the seafood flounder, as he loves fresh seafood. He is hard to please but raves about South Island. I am a little sad to write this, as I don't want the secret to be out. But, they deserve to be known. Peggy Bostic, Pawleys Island

Review: Fantastic food, professional service, beautiful decor. Some of the reviews below are obviously a joke. We have never waiting more than normal for our food or to be seated, for that matter. The restaurant offers preferred seating to locals and are most accomodating. This is a place with real food for real people. We love the owner who always comes around to make sure everything is great. Jane Parker, Pawleys Island, SC

Review: We went at the suggestion of the hotel we were staying and were disappointed with the beef. The seafood was prepared well although not the quantity the menu suggested but the prime rib was cold and not cooked to expectation. We arrived early so the seating was not a problem but the waitress albeit nice and bubbly was dressed in a dirty shirt. I would not return to this restaurant.

Review: Rockwood, PA must have ownership in this joint. I read their review and was anxious to try this restaurant. Seriously, this place was one of the worst dining experiences my wife and I have ever had. The food was over-priced crap, and the wait staff was pathetic. My steak was grossly over-cooked, and when I politely told our server, a man who claimed to be the owner came over and argued with me. I can only surmise that the positive revues on this site are ringers written by people connected to this restaurant. Stay away!!!

Review: It was a great experience and the food was wonderful. Each table is unique with its own painting and the mood created is that of an Island Paradise. The food was FANTASTIC!!! The ribs were out of this world, the fried pickles were great and the service was fast and friendly. We went on July 4th and were seated immediately and served in no time at all. Our waitress was knowledgeable and enjoyable to be around. I would recommed it to anyone in the area as a truly enjoyable experience. We will be back next year when we visit Myrtle Beach.

Review: I am a local. I was not impressed with the slow service, nor the lipstick left on my wineglass by the previous customer. When my dinner came, it was incomplete and not cooked medium as I had asked. I was dissapointed and will probably not go back!

Review: Our first visit to this restaurant was excellent in every way; we had arrived about 7:30 pm. Our next visit was about 6 pm and there were "food situations" which were not the case on visit No. 1. On visit No.2 the salad was wilted and skimpy and the "hot" bread was served cold. My filet was excellent on both visits, however, Chicken fjitas were excellent on both visits. I had the best baked sweet potato of my life on visit No.2. Appetizers were hot and excellent. I wonder if the "food problems" on visit No. 2 were because we arrived just at the end of the "early bird special" time. If so, I would hope for more consistancy in quality from this otherwise excellent restaurant. We will return!

Review: Extremely unimpressed. Food was average, service was ok, but left wanting, and the atmosphere is lacking. Strip was tough, and when brought to the attention of the waitstaff, they seemed indifferent. Manager did stop by and apologize for the quality which leads me to believe that this is a common occurance. The atmosphere.... Well let's just say you can only dress a pig up so much....

Review: I could have grilled better chicken and shrimp on my own grill, waitress was very tacky and did not present herself well, and the peel and eat shrimp was pathetic. The prices were not worth what we got to eat in the end.

Review: I eat here regularly, and recommend it to others. Not fancy and pretentious, but solid. Very professional staff seems to be experienced and not "just filling in" between jobs. Prices tend to be lower than the competition while the overall experience is as good or better. Large fireplace is very nice during the cool months of winter. Also has a real bar with a real bartender. Consistently good, which can not be said about a lot of resort-area restaurants.

Review: First visit to South Island. Very impressed. The servings were very adequate, ribs were super, baked potato was excellent. Our waitress was fantastic!! We did not have to wait for our meal and the "early bird" price was a bonus. Have sent others there and they were more than satisfied. Will definitely return.

Review: The reason I chose those ratings is because me and my family went there to eat for the early bird special and we sat there for at least1-2 hours waiting for our food! they came out and told us that our food would be done in 3 mintues and we sat there for 15-20 mintues.
