My husband and I have been coming to Sea Merchants for the last 5 years. We found this restaurant by chance just riding around looking for a restaurant that wasn't the normal buffet. We get the salmon just about everytime but have tried some of the other delicious food. We have not had anything that was not great!!!

Party of 14 and everyone's meal was outstanding. Our waitress was Erin and she did an exceptional job, but I did notice that the others helped out each other out with their duties. One small item though , I had asked for "Pittsburgh style" ( charred on the outside and rare in the middle) Filet and it came out just seared, therefore it had to go back under the broiler. Most had the grouper or Prime rib and early reports were great. The Key lime pie wasn't the best as it had 3/4 of cream and 1/4 of Key Lime on the bottom.

My husband and I love Sea Merchants! We have been coming here quite often for the past 5 years and always for a special occasion. I've always been a big fan of the Grouper, but someone suggested we try the filet and it is really the best steak I've found!

I have never been to the Sea Merchant before this month. We were not intending to go there and found it by accident. I immediately loved the atmosphere. Our waiter went beyond the average level of sevivce. He made great recomendations (food and wine) and was correct. After eating, we were leaving and the owner came out and spoike to us. Very nice and down to earth. I was only disappointed by the fact that we did not see the lounge located on the 2nd floor until we were leaving. We eat out almost every night and I think that this establishment is everything that one should expect from a better venue.

Every year my wife and I go to the Sea Merchants for our anniversary dinner and have always had a wonderful experience. This year was no exception! The food was outstanding and our server (Matt) was exceptional. Our 34th wedding anniversary dinner was perfect! I called two weeks in advance to reserve a table by the fire, it is cold in February, and we were seated right away. Hats off to the owners and the entire staff. Many thanks!!

As always the Sea Merchant never disappoints. We came down on a golf trip with 12 guys, about half of us had been there before. Everyone loved it. From the blackend ribyes to the grouper. The one thing we could never understand why is never packed to the walls when we go. Service was outstanding. Why anyone would go to Myrtle and go to one of the chain places and pass the Sea Merchant up is beyond me. Great as always and we'll back......

This was our second visit to this restaurant and the food and service were even better than we remembered. The staff is very courteous, knowledgeable and friendly. They were very willing to work with us on the food selection for our 3 small children. We love that the food is diverse and really enjoyed the seafood scampi, veal, and ribs. We've decided to make this amazing restaurant a must-visit each year!

We picked this restaurant based on the reviews. It was fantastic! It does look shabby on the outside, but when you step in, a very nice atmosphere. We were seated promptly. The waitstaff was excellent, very nice, quick to bring drinks and food. The salads were very good. I got the crab cakes, by the way, the best I have ever had! My husband got the grouper casino, was fantastic. This is a local jem, and a place that we will come back to eat, every time we are here. The prices were reasonable. In fact, we will be going back one more time ,before we leave, to try the filet mignon.

Wow I can't say enough good things about this place. My family and I were in Myrtle Beach on vacation. We were tired of the tourist food so I went looking at the reviews on here to see if there was actually some decent food in Myrtle Beach. I liked what I read on here and we decided to give Sea Merchants at shot. Of course like everyone else said the outside was not very inviting but don't let that deter you. We walked in and I literally stuck my head back out the door to make sure I was in the same place. The inside was dark, cozy, and old time elegant. We had 7 people and were seated immediately. We had the appetizer sampler which we all agreed was really good. I was torn at first because so many of the menu items sounded so good. Remembering what I had read on here I went with the steak as did most of the others in our party. OMG the steak was amazing. THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD. Everyone else who had it agreed. It literally melted in your mouth. I dreamed about this meal for many nights to come. Others in our party had the flounder which was awesome and I don't even really like fish. As well as the seafood pasta which again was really good. The prices were comparable with all the other tourist food and the value is way better then any other we found. And quite frankly I would have paid double for that meal. Finally our waiter was Edwardo and he was attentive and friendly. Our drinks never went empty and the bread was kept full. It was an amazing meal and one I will gladly indulge in again as soon as I return to Myrtle Beach.

im sorry but what the hell kind of food do u people like, cause this place is so discusting.. no class or good food at all.. honestly, it was a joke. Not sure how they even manage to keep the property. We went on a Friday night, and we were like the only people in there.. That sure explains alot. Not sure what the hell possessed us to stay. But i almost threw up when we were served Oysters. They weren't even in the shells and plus the potatoes they served.. looks like they just cut a boiled potatoe in 3rds... super nasty. Please anyone reading this for ur own good.. dont go here.. plus the picture above doesnt even look like th place. please save ur self, ud be better off at mcdonalds, seriously.

About 10 years ago we were walking on the beach when we met a fellow taking pictures, after striking up a conversation we found that he was a local so we asked about any restaurants that he would reccomend. Without pause he said the Sea Merchant,"all the locals dine there". We tried it and have since included it as part of our vacation ever since. Although a little pricey I've learned in life that you get what you pay for, and the Sea Merchant is worth every penny.

Veal, Shrimp/Scallpos & Prime Rib all excellent - far above average. Waiter was very accommodating & friendly. Restaurant needs updated/remodeled & uneven enterance & flooring corrected. Rope/ragged stuff between booths REALLY needs to be replaced. Maybe a separate room/place to separate casual diners from large groups of rowdy golfers. No smoking in restaurant made it a very pleasant experience overall.

There are not five stars for every category due solely to the fact that I want to make sure the reader(s) know I was actually paying attention and answering in an realistic manner. A true local (born in Myrtle Beach in '52), my wife (here since '71 from another excellent seafood area -Maryland), and my children and their spouses all find this to be a favorite place.

It is not a cheap restaurant (you'll spend $50+- for a couple with a nice tip, and the staff is such that you'll always want to tip well) but it is an incredibly good deal in comparison to other Class Act restaurants (e.g., two great crab cakes that are "meaty" enough to please my Maryland wife can be a part of a full meal for 20% less than other equivalent local places).

The staff all wear tuxedo shirts and the atmosphere is appropriately upper crust without being intimidating. The complaints I've found in a few reviews mostly mystify me, although I'll grant that the bathrooms are adequate but not pristine. I am a commercial appraiser who has been in a huge number of restaurants' kitchens. My lovely wife knows what it means when I come home and tell her that we do (or definitely don't) need to go to a particular place. While I've never been in this restaurant as a part of my profession I am more than pleased with the cleanliness I can see of the kitchen. Having said this I will also agree that the reviews which mention the lack of road appeal are correct - for some reason the restaurant is just not noticeable from the Highway. The good news here is that there is virtually always available seating with little waiting - this is a godsend for locals in a community like the Grand Strand. Hey! Wait a Minute! Why am I possibly messing up my good luck with easy seating here by recommending this place?

Perhaps the most telling things I can say about the Sea Merchants are these: (1) We were introduced to it 20+ years ago and have gone religiously ever since - especially for "special" occasions. (2) Ditto #1 for our now grown children who find this to also be their favorite special place. (3) They have a small separate section that housed a wedding reception we had there for one of our children - every guest has reportedly become a fan since then. (4) I've got no reason to tell other people about this place other than to assure tourists and locals alike that there is still a small, local restaurant that adheres to the ideals that made our tiny little-known tourist town into the massive Grand Strand now known throughout the nation. This last thing I especially know - I was here in the 50's and 60's when this philosophy was dreamed up as a way to put Myrtle Beach on the map. The Sea Merchants Restaurant deserves to be on that map.

Like many others, I was recommended this place by this website and the local hotel manager. We came in and the atmosphere was nice and cozy. I had thought my family and I came to a great place, a local restaurant serving up the local seafood. Looking at the menu, we saw the prices were a bit high ($15 at the very LEAST for an entree), but since the food was fresh and local, we decided it would probably be well worth it. The She-Crab soup was great, very thick (though $4 a cup, bit high) and rich, definitely the highlight of the meal.

Then it all went downhill. We got the sampler of oysters, mushrooms, and chicken. ALL of the items were under seasoned and for $11 for all of it, it left a lot to be desired. Salt and seafood go hand in hand and under seasoning food is a cardinal sin of the kitchen, especially if you're charging that much for it. Our salads came, no frills there, basic salad with store bought dressing. I had ordered a double platter of scallops and oysters with rice because I wanted local fresh sea food and because it was winter (shellfish are plentiful during winter, so it is definitely the best time to eat them). I was a bit irked they couldn't fry my oysters and broil the scallops and when I got my plate, I was a bit disgusted to say the least. I got a pile of green beans that were GROSSLY overcooked (like limp, soggy, rolled up paper towels). The rice was as bad as packaged 99 cent ready made rice, except the ready made rice would at least have seasoning, this rice had 0 flavor. Then my seafood, which was cooked well, but had 0 seasoning, which made the chef in me cry. Everything at the table was bland and my mother's shrimp were GROSSLY overcooked to the point where it was the equivalent of eating sandy rubber. Then came to the dessert (Turtle Pie + Pecan Pie) which while delicious, was very obviously a pre-made dessert that the restaurant buys from a third party. Not bad I suppose, but my father hid the check away from me so I dunno how much they charged us for it (by going off their menu, probably a huge amount).

The noise level got extremely loud by the end and as I looked around, I noticed my family and I were the only ones under 60 in the restaurant. Not exactly the hippest place and the waiter by the end was obviously more enamored with taking care of everyone else and not us.

All in all, this was a disappointing experience. The food is grossly overpriced and the chef(s) here obviously have no idea about the basics of cooking seafood (cooking shrimp and seasoning is literally child's play). If I paid $7-8, I would be fine for this, but I slapped down $17.95 for my plate and I'm sorry but for that quality of food, it's almost better just to go to a chain where they at least have the basics down. Why the locals love this place is beyond me.

We were referred to this restaurant by a local at another North Myrtle Beach establishment. She told us this was where the locals dined. We were skeptical as the outside of the restaurant does not reflect the quality of the food and service of this restaurant. The seafood was excellent. The steaks were excellent. The wine was excellent and reasonably priced. Everyone in our group was very pleased with their meals. What a nice find and we will definitely be back next year!

When I arrived (with 14 of us) the atmosphere was nice. Dark, cool, wood, 'ocean'...nice. They are understaffed so expect your water and drink glass to be empty often and for a while. At one point every glass I could see around me at the other tables was empty. I ordered the fried shrimp, scallops and flounder. When it arrived I couldn't believe what I had. The trio I ordered were breaded the same, heavy like fish sticks, with bread crumbs and tasted just like Gorton's fish sticks...frozen from a box. I was so disappointed. Nobody at our table was satisfied. Next table over was a guy trying, just like I had, to remove all the breading. Don't do it. You can think about it, but don't do it.

After reading all the reviews of the Sea Merchants, my boyfriend and I decided to try the place out one night on our last trip to myrtle beach in May. We were a bit skeptical at first, since the outside of the restaurant did not look too appealing and there were only a couple of cars in the parking lot. However, we knew this based on other reviews, so we decided to go inside and see for ourselves. There was only one other couple inside eating, besides us. However, we were promptly addressed and seated in a nice booth. We were pleasantly surprised with the atmosphere. It was nautical with lots of wooden accents, candles on every table, and a fireplace to the back end. We were enthusiastically greeted by our waiter, Mathew, who we had a nice conversation with, being he was familiar with NJ, which is where we are from. He was an excellent waiter- very down-to-earth, friendly, and funny. What was nice was that the first thing he did was give us a history of the Sea Merchants and the cooks. It was nice to hear- you don't get that often. Mathew thoroughly went over all of the specials for the night and even gave us his personal opinion on what he thought were the best items. They specialized in their steaks and fresh fish. He even told us that the filet mignon was a very nice cut that night. We were given a basket full of warm, fresh rolls, as well as a house salad that was very good. I ordered the chicken special, which was stuffed with mushrooms and swiss cheese in a cream sauce w/ a side of green beans and red potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the filet mignon that also had a cream sauce on top, with large, crispy steak fries and green beans. Both of our dishes were absolutely delicious and our dinner was one of the best we had on our vacation. It is reasonably priced and well worth it for the quality and amount of food you get. It didn't matter that the restaurant wasn't packed like all the tourist traps in myrtle beach. We had a quiet, lovely night. Don't be intimidated by the outside of the building or the location. Also, we didn't experience any problems with smoke, like some of the other reviews had talked about. It was a very clean, authentic place to eat and we'll be going back on our next visit!

Service was very good but this restaurant is expensive for the quality of the food. The sides were good (not great, but good) but the seafood was very bland - both myself and two others felt the same way. I don't get all the wonderful reviews. Maybe they had an off night? It's possible, but I won't be going back to find out.

I am a local and this is one of the best restaurants in town. When my paretns visit we always have at least one dinner at Sea Merchants. I have to respond to a review that said the restaurant is all smoking and the air is toxic. First of all...that is incorrect..it is not an entire smoking area. My family are all non-smokers and we have never had a bad experience with the air quality. And their prices are by far the most reasonable you will find along the Grand Strand for quality food. The management, wait staff, food and experience is always consistantly GREAT. If you have a complaint about Sea Merchants..you probably should never go out to dinner!

Went to Sea Merchant because my friends daughter worked there. When we drove by was let down by the outside appearance but later in week decided to try it. What a great dining experience!! The inside is absolutely charming and so warm and cozy with the large fireplace and all the wood on the walls. Ordered the flounder and oysters and wife had the shrimp. Food was excellent and the portions were generous. Our waitress was Kim. She was knowledgable and made excellant recommendations and provided outstanding service. This is truly a diamond in the rough and do not be fooled by the outside.

WOW! Great food, Great service! My family and I have been visiting Myrtle Beach for more than a decade and i can not believe that we have missed this place. I have added to the top of my favorite list as resteraunts to visit on future trips. I suggest the Grouper and the SeaMerchants Tenderloin. Both extremely wonderful dishes. The homade pies were second to none if you even have room for desert after the meal or do as I do and get it to go. A+++ It is werth the look to find it just about 11 blocks south of Main Street in North Myrtle Beach

I always have a great time here, the food and sevice never disappoint me. The owners are wonderful people, I ahve known them for over thirty years. All they have ever done is cook seafood and steaks, they are masters of the craft. I always recommend this place to my friends when they go to the beach, because I know they will truly enjoy it. Just go and try it for yourself, tell them Carl sent you.

A tremendous find! After numerous family vacations to NMB we decided to try Sea Merchant after reading reviews. We almost did not go in because the exterior of the building needs a lot of work. Good thing my wife insisted we proceed. Outstanding scallop appetizer, fresh bread and homemade salad dressing. All four of our entrees, including the kids, ages 11 and 13, exceeded expectations. The scallops on my seafood platter were the best I ever had. All this place needs is a coat of paint on the outside and some landscaping and the parking lot would be full of cars, not weeds.

Food was EXCELLENT! For starters, the salad dressing tasted homemade, not bottled. The crab cakes are not filled with stuffing but crab meat and the side dishes - homemade french fries and steamed green beans - were perfect. We will definately return to this diamond in the rough. From the outside, restaurant doesn't look like much but the food quality, restaurant cleanliness and great service make up for the outer appearance.

We were looking for a restaurant unique to Myrtle Beach serving seafood and steaks, and while we thought we were heading into a "dive," we were pleased overall. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful, though they were slightly busier than expected. My husband was especially happy with his steak. We would try this restaurant again if we come back to MB!

My brother and his girlfriend have been trying to get me to visit North Myrtle Beach since they bought a condo five years ago. When I visited this past week, they said it was a must to go to dinner at the Sea Merchant. They were right!!! I had the grouper casino. It was absolutely delicious! The meals that they had were great as well. There will be six of us going to NMB in November, and the Sea Merchant will certainly be on the top of the list.

My family and I ate here twice during our week stay at the beach. Great food. Great service. Great atmosphere. It was not jam packed like other restaurants, but it should have been. We did not wait to get in at all, either time. One gets the feeling that it is kind of a secret place. It's a small, cozy place without a huge, spotlight-like sign out front.. And unlike others would lead you to believe, it was NOT a smoke filled restaurant.

Sea Merchant is by far my favorite restaurant in Myrtle Beach. I go to Myrtle 4-5 times a year and the Sea Merchant is always on my list. The Blacked Del Ray is my favorite and my wife gets the Grouper Parmesan. The menu hasn’t changed in the ten years we have been going and they have perfected every meal. Don’t be scared off at the dark cozy rustic atmosphere. We’re not smokers and haven’t experienced any problems. We even may go twice in the same week. The staff is as good as they come.

To say Sea Merchants is rustic is an overstatement . The food was okay. The service was fine . The visit to this eatery was one that I will not do again. The mens restroom was awful , old and dirty. There are plenty of better places to eat , and better surroundings . And it is overpriced . Dont bother! yes I am a local . And have eaten here before . It just keeps slipping a little more each time I have come here. July. 2008 .

Food was good, and service was friendly, but the restaurant does not have a separate smoking section. The folks from Maryland were right - the smoke can be overpowering to people who don't smoke. I wanted to enjoy my meal, but ended up eating quickly to get some fresh air and packing up my leftovers to take home.

Wow! This place has to be one of the best kept secrets in NMB. I took a group of a dozen (with a reservation) and couldn't have hoped for a better evening over dinner. Everyone enjoyed their meal, the steaks were cooked to perfection and the fish was wonderfully presented. The area we were in was quiet so all could be involved in conversations, the waiter was attentive and quick to respond to requests, and the bill for our dinner, which included a few bottles of wine, was very reasonable. Comfortable and casual place for a dinner group of two or twenty!

Sea Merchants was recommended by the resort where we were staying and it was wonderful. They have a relaxed atmosphere with a cozy fireplace. Sea Merchants has the best steak we've ever eaten, and the scallops and crab were delicious. The waiter we had was courteous and attentive. If you haven't had their turtle ice cream pie, then get it the next time you are there. There wasn't any smoke in the room nor any ashtrays and their prices are very reasonable. We will definitely put Sea Merchants on our to do list every time we are in NMB.

We were introduced to this restaurant several years ago by some relatives. If we are in Myrtle Beach, you can bet Sea Merchants is tops on our list! We have never had a bad experience here. The steaks are perfectle cooked just as you order them-and the service is superb! PLEASE, do not pay attention to the review from the people from Maryland. We have never, ever had a problem with smokers and, as far as the prices go,if you consider $21.95 expensive for the best steak/scallops you have ever tasted-this place may not be for you.

On Dec. 11, 2007 My Red Hats group (Red Hot Chili Peppers) held our Christmas Dinner at Sea Merchants. Many had never been there before. Everyone loved their dinners, drinks and service! We had a gift exchange and were seated next to the fireplace (which was not going as it was a warm night), but the Christmas tree was just beautiful! It made for a great evening for many first time diners and they will be back! Thanks to all for a super evening!

We go down to Myrtle Beach 2-3 times per year and ALWAYS eat here! We own a condo way down near Surfside Beach and feel it is worth the 45 min ride up to the Sea Merchant. It is the best meal on the beach, and reasonably priced with huge portions! Our favorites are the Grouper Parmesan and Steak au Poivre, dishes that aren't served everywhere. Their green beans are fresh, and their french fries, which are batter dipped, are to die for! The owners are native Carolinans, and we've discovered that it is a locals' favorite. Understandably so!

The is a hidden gem! I have lived in NMB for close to 10 years & driven by so many times - how many excellent meals I've missed! The interior is rustic - you feel like you're inside an old ship - but cozy. It is a smoking restaurant but I have been told it's becoming non-smoking in 2009. The servers are very professional and knowledgable - they're not just some college kids down for the summer. The scallop appetizer with bacon is the best, and the steaks are undeniably the best at the beach. I challenge anyone to find a tastier, more tender steak in Myrtle Beach, maybe in SC. Try the Steak Del Ray - trust me, you'll never forget it!

I am not a smoker and have never been bothered by smoke in this resteraunt. And we eat here about once a month. If you want a semi-intimate meal..ask for a booth, it's very cozy and quet.

A friend recommended this restaurant and I definately agree with all the reviews with positive comments about the food, service and atmosphere. I had the Parmesan Grouper and my wife had her favorite, a filet. It's rare that I can find a restaurant where I can enjoy good seafood and my wife can get a good steak. Both are outstanding here. We'll definately return whenever we're near North Myrtle Beach. We almost didn't go after reading the July 11 review about the toxic smoke filled atmosphere. We didn't see any evidence of smoke or smoking anywhere and no ashtrays in sight. We didn't go to the lounge upstairs.

We went to this restaurant based on the reviews it received on this website. We were seated promptly, but then realized that there is no escape from the heavy cigarette and cigar smoke. We ordered sodas, but my eyes teared so badly that we had to leave. I will never go back because the air is toxic. I feel sorry for the workers who have to breathe the smoky air every day. The food may be good - we'll never know. But, it's important for others to know that the restaurant is completely smoking. The meals looked pricey, so when you pay good money for a meal, you want to be able to smell it, taste it, and to breathe while you eat. Unfortunately, that can't happen here.

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. My wife had the Parmesan topped Grouper, I had the crab/scallop topped Filet. It was cooked to perfection! We went at 7:30 pm on a Wed. night, no waiting and immediate seating. The waitress was a pro, knew exactly what to offer from the 2 brothers that are the owner/chefs. My 10 year old son loved the chicken tenders and home fries. This place is on my list of must eats for Myrtle Beach from now on. Absolutely the best in the North Myrtle area. Ambience is perfect for that quieter evening without the loud crowd, what I enjoy at our ages. Pricing was as fair as any seafood or steak medium priced place, but much better due to the service and excellent dishes. We will probably do this again before we leave this weekend. Highly recommended!

We are locals and have been here twice. The ambiance is very romantic. I would suggest going on the off season as noise levels can get up there. This is by far the best steak I have ever had!! They age their own meats and both times we went the food was perfectly cooked and tasted wonderfully. The servers are always attentive but do not smother you by coming to the table 10 times in 5 minutes. I would definitely reccomend this to anyone looking for a dimly lit incredible meal!

YUMMY!! We went here based on previous reviews that I read before going to Myrtle Beach. When we drove by, we kind of looked at each other as it doesn't look so hot from the outside. We reminded ourselves of the reviews and decided to go in and glad we did! It's cozy, cute and romantic inside. Nice music playing, fireplace lit, nice lighting. I had shrimp (9 or 10 large ones!) and my husband had Grouper Parmesan. The food was delicious. The waiter was very attentive and friendly and the prices were good. I'm sorry we waited until the last full day of our vacation as we would have eaten here at least another time.

Don't let the exterior of this restaurant fool you. Once you walk into the main area of the restaurant, you'll see what I mean. There's a huge fireplace burning, cozy booths for couples or large tables for larger groups, great atmosphere. The Sea Merchants filet and the Scallops Pauline are to die for, the best I have ever had.
