Pawleys Island Tavern The PIT
Rated: 3.2 out of 5 with 17 Reviews

A hidden treasure of distinct Pawleys Island style. We enjoyed the outside deck with the georgeous live oaks overhead. The crab cakes are quite the dish. The fish special was quite surprising. The kids LOVED the pizza. Ten Toes Up, a local band, started playing outside around 9pm. The band was really good, but we had to get the kids home. Really fun place, can't wait to return to our new found restaurant. Friendly staff, great food, convenient to Island. We look forward to having an adult night out next summer to enjoy the band and sit at the Tiki bar.

OK - so we're a little slow - after visiting my parents in Pawleys for the past 24 years - we discovered the PIT 5 years ago during a U-Go-Girls golf trip and have been regulars ever since - it's like a back yard party with a tiki bar - so much fun - Thursday thru Saturday is the most lively - bands are always fun - food is great and everyone is friendly - regardless of what we're doing in the area, the PIT is our last stop before we head home! In the off-season - still fun to be inside and have some wonderful pizza and listen to the bands - we love it and our kids love it!

We visited The PIT twice during our week vacation in Pawleys Island just a couple weeks ago. This was our first (and second) time there. We had a large group of people, went on a Saturday night. We sat outside and the mosquitos were horrible - BUT the staff gave us a can off Off to use! The crab balls were DELICIOUS! The pizza was great as well. We all wanted items from the dessert menu but couldn't do it that night so we decided to come for lunch a few days later (to also have more crab balls). This time I decided to get the Crab Cake Plate! By far the best crab cake I have ever had!! We sat inside that time and my 3 year old and I decorated a dollar bill to add to their walls/ceiling! Will definitely make this a stop each year on our vacation to Pawleys!

I came across this place by accident around 10 years ago, and they had the most delicious pizza. It became a tradition for me and my daughter to stop in every summer when at Pawleys for pizza. I thought it was the best I'd ever had, anywhere, ever. Flash forward to 2010, the pizza was awful. Skimpy on the toppings, the great tasting cheese was gone, and the sauce, yuck! Used to have a proper tangy sauce, but now it tastes like that junk that Domino's or Papa John's uses. Sorry, but you've lost me as a customer. What was once a "must do" destination, has turned into a "too bad, it used to be good" place.

We heard about this place from friends of ours that had traveled to the area last year...we went on a Friday night and the place was not too busy..,The food was ok nothing great and the pizza did not taste like pizza it was good but not great like we had heard it was. The band was loud and the bugs were awful. Definately not what we thought and we would not go back again. It took almost an hour to get our pizza and then when we were ready took about 10 mins to get our check. The server we had was too busy talking to people at the outside bar then in taking care of us.

The PIT. is a quirky place that your young adult will just love. Live blues music, Outdoor bar and seating area in good weather. Nice bar and decent service, most of the time. The stange atmosphere is created by hundreds of dollar bills stapled to the ceiling and walls with messages from donors on them "Joe fromr Kokomo", "Go Gamecoks!"...stuff like that. There are also old license plates on the wall. The seafood is just average but the burgers and pizza are great and the PIT fries are to die for (and you just might after eating them....covered with chili, cheese, and jalapeño peppers.) Not for fine dining but definitely worth a stop for a fun time.

We arrived on a thursday night about 5. The girl behind the bar seemed tipsy and reeked of cigarrettes and alcohol. We were, unfortunately seated at the bar. We witnessed this yellow toothed harpie belittling some poor person on the phone, maybe,I hope a relative or mate. When we politely asked if the food would be ready soon, she gave us the dirtiest look I have ever seen, and only said it IS made to order, you know. We could not enjoy our time there in the presence of this person,so instead of having a few drinks and waiting for the entertainment. We left, never to return.

I have been going to the PIT since before I moved here 5 years ago. Love the atmosphere, the music, and until this summer, the food and service. I brought out-of--town guests to dine there twice this summer. Both times I ordered the "catch of the day", and was sooo disapointed. It tasted like it came out of a cat food can. How can a restaurant that competes with so many other seafood restaurants serve old, frozen fish? And why would the wait staff be so rude when the dinner was sent back (the second time). I was embarassed. You should be too PIT!

Excellent food, service and atmosphere. We ate outside and our 2 teenage grandaughters, were so impressed by this place. We came several years ago, when it was the "Low Country Store" and it has since changed hands. We absolutely loved it and it was our best meal all week and for 4 adults it was very reasonable. Try it, and you will come away, I can assure you, very pleased.

I stopped by the Pawleys Island Tavern the other night to see some live music and was blown away. This is the premiere venue to watch live music on the Grand Strand. I've seen live music at alot of places down here, but nothing beats the quality of music and the ambience. The drinks are great and so are the bartenders. The crowd, of course, is fabulous. When you think live music, think Pawleys Island Tavern.

On our first night of vacation last year, my family and I tried the PIT. We really just wanted something close by (we were staying in Litchfield) and reasonably priced since we were all tired from driving and unpacking. Wow - we were all pleasantly suprised. It is a very unassuming place so I wasn't expecting the quality of food that we had. It was fabulous and very reasonably priced for what you got. We ate outside and enjoyed the band under the live oaks. We will definitely be back this year! One note: If you eat on the deck during the summer, bring the bug spray.

My wife and I love this place and go there alot. Especially in the summer, when you can sit outside under those beautiful live oaks and listen to some live music. If you go here, get the crab cake dinner. Their crab cakes are the best on the Grand Strand.

To the previous complainer, you couldn't step in Bistro 217 if you tried. They have strict guidelines on who they can and cannot let in. You, undoubtably fall in the latter. The Pit is a great place, for REAL people who are laid back and know how to have fun.

I have lived in this area for almost forty years. For much of that time, there has been a restaurant in this location. This one is the best ever. It is the epitome of our "arrogantly shabby" Pawleys Island image. The food is simple and delectable...the service impeccable. Most of all, everyone who frequents the PIT is treated as family and the atmosphere is extremely relaxing with no pretensions....calming and homey under the awesome oak trees. The entertainment is always great and energetic and they cater to the older crowd with earlier entertainers on Sunday nights featuring classics and jazz etc.

Every one of them enjoyed the atmosphere, the staff, the patrons and especially the food. I highly recommend a visit to Pawleys Island Tavern if you are anywhere near Pawleys Island.

I haven’t even mentioned the weekend entertainment!

WOW. Some of the best around and not only that, there is no cover charge.

This was by far the worst restaurant I have eaten at in Pawleys Island. We waited twenty-five minutes to be seated outside. We had to walk inside to request our own drinks, why bother sending a waitress? The manager's excuse was that people who sat outside were normally only there to drink. Well, when the inside is packed where would she have suggested seating the rest of the people waiting? Once we had finally (forty-five minutes in) received menus and an apology it took them twenty minutes to bring drink refills. We left. It was horrible. The food is all prepackaged fried food. This restaurant shames the reputation of excellent Pawleys Island retreats.Next time I'll drive the .25 mile further up the street to eat at Bistro 217. Perhaps The PIT employees should do the same to see how a real restaurant is operated.
