Went looking for Louis' Restaurant last week as we had eaten there 3 years ago. Alas, the location is now occupied by a new restaurant called High Hammock Kitchen. Don't know what happened to Louis......

This restaurant has closed. I tried to find it February 26, 2009 and was told by a local resident that it has closed. Another establishment was located at 10880 Ocean Highway.

This is one of the better restaurants in Pawley's Island. We came last year and this year as well and ate at Louis'. The shrimp and grits are as good as you can get! Service was good and prompt. I am trying to find Louis' cookbook. They were out. We'll eat here everytime we are in Pawleys Island.

I can't comment about the service because I was diining alone and ate at the bar. I chose the restaurant because of the James Beard award (a culinary award) it won. There is the "fish camp" which is a large outdoor deck and the more formal restaurant. There is occaisionally a band across from the fish camp. If you are dining for a special occasion you may want to ask if the band will be playing because the band noise filters into the formal restaurant. I ate the snapper entree with the melted eggplant and tomato carpaccio on the advice of the bartender and it was spectacular. The spinach salad was good but not awe inspiring. I enjoyed the strawberry shortcake biscuit for dessert. If I were dining at a table I would probably opt to go early to hopefully avoid the service mishaps described in other postings. The quality of the food at Louis' seems to be excellent.

The fish camp name prompted us to give it a try; however, it was not what I typically think of as a "fish camp." The food was way over priced for lunch. I was very disappointed.

We were a party of four on a busy Saturday night and were seated promptly. Our server, who had obviously been with the restaurant for some time was knowledgeable about the food and wine and friendly without being obstrusive. In fact, we ordered all her suggestions and were really wowed - amazing crab cakes, best shrimp & grits ever and really fresh trout stuffed with crab cake and a perfectly aged steak. The atmostphere is warm and inviting. We will definitely be beck.

We visit the area about every year and we always hit Franks. The night we were getting ready for Franks I had the TV on and they had the top 5 list and Franks was #2 and Louis's was #1. I told my wife that tomorrow we'd try Louis's as nothing can beat Franks.

Well at Louis's the service and atmosphere were much better . I had fillet of beef med. Rare (perfect), the wife had the best pork chop I ever tasted (he he) . It was like p f changs mongolian beef but in a thick pork chop. That thing was to die for. Of course the wife got it well well done and thought she trashed another piece of meat but I'm here to tell you that thing was perfect even with the well done.

Now for the bad, and what knocked it off the exellent list. They dont tell you that you dont get a salad unless you order it. The desert (cheese cake) was grainy-like, not good at all.

Bottom line: It's #2 on my list but could so easily be #1 if they tell you about the salad deal and they get a pastry chef.

We had a reservation for seven o'clock. Got seated immediately, BUT waited 30 minutes for our cocktails. AND waited 45 minutes for our entrees. It was my husband's birthday, which they were aware of, but he didn't even get a cupcake so we couldn't sing happy birthday. Our wait for drinks and entrees were so long that the hostess came over and gave us a complimentary glass of wine. We would never go back there again. And, it was pricey.

The food was good, sure, and the atmosphere was lovely. However, far undercutting the decent meal was the INCREDIBLY LOUSY SERVICE. Though we were seated immediately with a reservation, first drink times were 20 minutes, and even then were incomplete - we were a party of five but only 2 drinks came with some mumbling about the bar being busy. It was another 20 minutes before the salad course arrived and 45 minutes between the salad and the entree. When one of our party went to the hostess desk to ask about our entrees, the hostess saw her coming and ran out into the courtyard to have a cigarette. (We could see her from our table) When dinner FINALLY arrived, some of the meat was overdone. We'd normally have stayed for dessert, particularly as this was a celebratory dinner, but it was another 15 minutes for the check!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE and for the price, just inexcusable. (It wasn't even that busy; there were SEVERAL empty tables, so there wasn't even that possible excuse.) When we returned to our condo, we ran into another lady and chatted, telling her how terrible the dinner was and she said they'd had the SAME results.

Her family, like ours, made an expensive error in our dining choice, and neither will ever go to Louis's again. (Incidentally, I used to be a fine dining server and know the drill. I also usually tip between 20-25%, because I know how tough a job it is and appreciate good service. Our terrible waiter at Louis's got 10%, which was frankly generous.)

This was to be a birthday celebration for my dad while we were on vacation. He didn't even get a dessert, and my sister and I, who were treating him, were mortified at the whole experience.

All I can say is WOW. What a delicious restaurant. I meet a surfer named Jody ( who works there) and he told me about this place. We loved everything we ate, especialy the shrimp over grits. My son loved the mashed potatos. I never knew mashed potatos could be that good. We got the waiter named Jody and just loved him. Hey, thanks Jody for telling us about Louis's. See you in September 2006.
