Our service started off a little rocky as whoever was to serve us forgot us. A nice fellow stopped to ask if anyone was taking care of us and he said he would take care of us. He was great. He had our meal fast and it was the best seafood I think I ever had. I had the fried seafood platter. I will return again next year for sure. It is as good as Capt. George's if not better. Everyone should try it at Capt. John's.

The family and myself travel to Calabash from Stephens City, Virginia abt. every year to every other year. Upon arriving in Calabash,my wife insists that our first stop be to Capt. Johns to wind down from the long drive and having dinner. My adult children and their significant others always enjoy going as a family on trips to Calabash. We all enjoy the quality and quantity of service at Capt. Johns. Delicious food, confortable atmosphere and great prices. Their staff have always treated us very wonderfully. Ok Captain Johns, We'll see you in July!!!

The scallops were the best I ever had. A heaping portion on a large platter made it a real value. My companion had other seafood and was happy with it...maybe not as happy as I was with my scallops but we both recommend it. Oh the hush puppies are different and excellent.

I have eaten at Capt. Johns 3 times. The first time I went, it was just a new restaurant, so EVERYONE was there. My parents didn't want to go to Captain Nances because their food is just disgusting. The first time, we had to wait a while but their crab legs were DELICIOUS. The second time we went, we had to wait a little, probably about 10 minutes. Crab legs were still good. But this year we went around my birthday, 3 days before my birthday actually. The food was not that good, but it was fun to play with it because it was my mother, my sister, and my sister and i had 3 friends altogether there. It was hilarious, but I don't think the person who had to clean it up had fun :p And we didn't have to wait at all, and there were probably 5 people in that restaurant besides us. The first and second time we went it was PACKED. Eat here if you enjoy crab legs though.

Mobbed with families during the summer, this place is your typical tourist trap where they throw mountains of bland deep-fried food at you. Don't believe they could stay in business if they didn't have the hordes of beachgoers looking for shrimp platters.

For 25 years may family and friends have frequented Calabash seafood houses at least 20 times a year. A competitor had most of our business for many of those years and not one time did the family owners ever walk over to our table to say thank you for your patronage or recognize us as we paid our check. After spending on average $2000 per year I would have expected them to at least say "nice to see you again". This past year we have been eating at all the dfferent Calabash restaurants and have now adopted Captain John's as our restaurant of choice. Having eaten there over 8 times this summer, we have found the atmosphere inviting, the food well prepared, the host and wait staff to be cordial and attentive, and the food quality better than the competition. I had some fish one evening that didn't meet my expectations and told the server. He immediately took the plate and replaced it within 5 minutes with hot portions and apologized. We have dined on weeknights, weekends, early, and late. Though sometimes having to wait longer than I like to wait, I get the attention once seated and realize this restaurant seats and serves its customers as quickly as they can and the wait is always worth it. The management seems to appreciate business patronage and even though not yet familiar with my name, recognize me and family as repeat customers.

I vacation in Calabash every single year with my extended family. There are in total, 11 of us. We always go to Captain Johns. I don't understand these negative reviews. We had a plethora of hushpuppies and the flounder was right on par. The service was great. I don't remember every having to even ask for a refill. I also had the french silk pie. It was DELICIOUS. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone I know who is coming to Sunset Beach.

Myself and three friends had dinner at Captain John's. When we received our orders we all had a large portion of uneatable food. The oysters were small and burnt and I think the oil was bad. I am not exaggerating when I say every member of my party threw up their food as soon as we returned to our rooms. Stay away!!! After we paid, we told the manager, Mr. Frank, we thought this was our worst seafood experience ever and he said we are the only complaint he has received tonight. We must be the only people that have eaten there today. For the record, our waitress was excellent.

I recently dined at Capt John's with my husband and I must say that it was a genuine treat!! We were seated overlooking the water where we could watch the boats. The server arrived at our table with fresh, hot hush puppies within 2 minutes of us being seated. I ordered the deluxe seafood platter and it was cooked to perfection. The fish was tender and tasty as was the oysters and shrimp. The food was on the table within 10 minutes of ordering and our server was attentive and anticipated our needs well. I would recommend Capt John's to anyone who wants a truly delightful dining experience!

This has been a regular stop for us each year and it is usually very good. We decided to go on our last night in MB so we could have seafood one last time. I have to say that the food, this time, was not that great. They gave a bowl the size of a shot-glass for the salad bar (which was less than desirable). The entrees came out and most of them were cold and some had to be sent back for a little more heat. I had the crab legs which were very good, but were ice cold. They give you drawn butter which is served in a cold dish (doesn't work very well) with no burner. They don't put anything over the crab legs to keep them hot (like a cloth napkin with boiling water on it) and with the butter getting cold....you get the idea... I will say the service was outstanding, but with cold food, it still wasn't a great experience. Hopefully this was just an off-night.

I guess this is like most places...just a matter of your server and time you were in the restaurant. We were there on Saturday the 1st of August. It was HORRIBLE. The hushpuppies were soggy and we asked for a new basket. We were told it would be 15 minutes. WTF...a deep fryer 4-6 minutes maximum. The flounder tasted frozen and the waitress was incompetent. Will not be back, but I doubt they care.

Ate there tonight. Food was great. I had the Small Seafood Platter ($11.95) which came with one large piece of flounder, shrimp and a devaled crab as well as a baked potato and cole slaw. The fish was moist and fried in a nice cornmeal, the shrimp was lightly battered and succulent as for the develed crab it was to die for. My 8 year old daughter had the flounder and shrimp, fries and cole slaw (seniors menu $7.95) and thought the flounder was the "best fish she has ever eaten" she even swapped most half of her shrimp to me for the last half of my flounder. My 5 year old had shrimp an fries off my 8 year olds plate. The only bad thing I can say is the fries was from a bag so order the baked potato. Oh yeah dont let the words small and senior fool you. we all left stuffed and I am a big eater. My wife was with us and doesn't like seafood so she ate off the salad bar ($5.50) which was fresh and well kept (she is a salad nut anyway).

We went to Capt John's on Sunday night at 6:30pm on June 28, 2009. Walked right in and were seated immediately as the place was less than half full. We were waited on within 10 minutes. There were seven in our party. I ordered the Whiting special. The Whiting was only one piece and it was bony and skinny. It wouldn't have fed a cat. Two others ordered the rib eye steak which was not done according to the order and had to be sent back. The rib eyes were tasty but the price was expensive. Another ordered a shrimp plate and it was very small and expensive for the amount. Another ordered a large seafood platter which was small and expensive. Another ordered the two item seafood platter and it was adequate. It took 30 minutes to receive our food from the time it was ordered. I talked to the waiter about my Whiting and he said he could bring me a flounder for $6 more. I asked to see the manager. The manager said I got exactly what I ordered and I should be satisfied. Well I wasn't. There are plenty of good restaurants in Calabash and I would avoid Capt John's.

Overall it was a classic North Carolina fish resturant. They had a good selection of shrimp, flounder, oyster, ect.. And everything, for the most part, can be prepared anyway you like (broiled, fried, grilled, ect..). The price is reasonable, and they have several steaks in case you have a non-seafood lover in your life. The food itself tasted fresh, came in a reasonable time, and I would recommend it to others. However, my only draw back is lack of creativity. Like many seafood resturants at the beach they do the basics well or better. But they have nothing that really sets them apart. Don't expect something fancy like pecan crusted flounder, or a rosemary/dill rubbed tilipa... If you want good seafood at a good price this place isn't bad.

After years of not coming to Capt.Johns I was excited to be there. NOT what I expected. They should look at themselves and find that 20 years ago, this was the place to be. So upset. I had told my daughter that this was the best. It was the worse. They even started cutting lights off before we finished. Menu a mess. Food cold. So upset. $85 for junk food I could have gotten on a strip mall. Will not go there again.

This was our first time visiting Calabash. We were very happy with Capt John's. Our server was excellent, the food was delicious, the salad bar was delicious too. The view of the water was beautiful. We were so happy with our decision to eat here.

Our bill was $46.00 for 2 dinners + 2 salad bars + 2 beers + 1 soda & a bowl of soup. That did not include the tip.

I ordered the Fantail Shrimp with baked potato & salad bar. My husband ordered the Steak (filet) it was cooked perfectly & also delicious.

With so many seafood restaruants to pick from in Calabash - you can not go wrong with this place.

The interior decor could use a little updating - but it was still very clean & nice.

It is a family tradition to eat there and then go to Callahan's and get christmas ornaments. Love it, would recommend it to anyone who loves good, fresh seafood. My Mom dreams about the crab cakes!

I persuaded our group of four to try this place after checking the reviews here, surprisingly, it wasn't as good as I had hoped for. I guess the waiter sort of set the tone for the evening when he noticed my University of Tennessee shirt and exclaimed, "I hate Tennesee fans!" (He was from Alabama). All that aside, the hushpuppies were far from the best that we have had, my garlic basted shrimp was just "OK", another in the party couldn't eat his salad because the lettuce wasn't cold, and his fried shrimp didn't have much taste. Another in the party did say that his flounder was good, so I guess it wasn't a total loss. The waiter did attend to our drinks, etc., so even with the remarks he had made earlier, he didn't ignor us. We had previously tried two of the other waterfront restaurants at the same area, and will undoubtedly revisit one of those on our return next year.

We went to Capt. John's in search of good seafood, but what we received was far from that. We thought that eating at a seafood house would guarantee fresh seafood prepared properly. What we actually received was overcooked, bland, and right out of a can. The seafood platters were cooked so long that everything was dry and mushy. The shrimp were the biggest disappointment though. We were expecting nice sized, fresh shrimp, but we received popcorn sized, right out of a can shrimp. We do not recommend going here if you are looking for seafood. The only thing the food is good for is fishing bait. You would have a better meal at Long John Silver's

We have been customers of this seafood house for years and have always been delighted by the service, atmosphere, and the food. We ate there on 8-8-07 and had our first bad experience. First I ordered a bowl of oyster soup as an appetizer and didn't get it until the main course was served. Also the fried oysters were overcooked and cold. Had one scallop that tasted awful. Guess after all these years we were bound to have a bad visit, but were totally surprised to have it at capt. John's. Don't know if we'll make that long trip again soon.

Worst restaurant experience of my life. Four of the five people at our table could not eat their food... I just turned mine back after 2 bites. You would think that a restaurant on the water water would have fresh seafood not frozen! even frozen it was the worst meal ever placed before me. Never once did the owner or manager come to the table to see why the food was returned or not eaten. The waitress was an order taker that's it... The bill came un-itemized for a total of $100. The whole experience was so bad that we just let it go and left. This is your worst kind of tourist trap. Save you money... Go to wendys..

My husband and I went to Captain Johns on July 29th with my best friend and her 2 adult children. First time there, won't be last! Best of the best in Calabash area. Been to 4 others and not as impressive as this one! Much cleaner, friendlier, and food was AWESOME. Waiter was top notch even in the HEAT, which was the only drawback. Need more ceiling fans in all areas of dining area. Other than that nothing needs improving upon. Had Seafood platter, best ever, especially the shrimp --- very fresh and great. Others had flounder and equally as good.

We picked Capt. John's because it had the most cars in the parking lot (always a good sign) and we were not disappointed. We got seated immediately and the service was excellent throughout the entire meal. Our server brought us more hush puppies and iced tea without us ever having to ask. The grilled shrimp and tuna were some of the best we have ever had. And the crab legs and fried calabash shrimp were also exceptional. Everything was tasty and fresh! My husband was impressed by the slaw and ate 3 bowls of it. And the kids loved the hush puppies with the honey butter dip. We'll most certainly go back there again next time we come to North Myrtle Beach.

We just made our first visit to Capt. Johns and found it to be very nice on the inside with a great water view and the smoking area was in a room to itself. The calabash shrimp was some of the best I've had but the fried flounder left alot to be desired. My daughter had the lemon-pepper fish and said it was good. The wait there was not as long as some other places and they also have a salad bar.

My family has been coming to Capt. John's for over 20 years and we have tried all the Resturants around Capt. John's and none has ever compared to this favorite hot spot. We used to love to come to Capt. John's then ride the Mary B cruise boat. Thank you for Great Food and a good time. Christie Buckland..
